Newbury Feby 8th 1780 Sr. Wharas it appears that many of the people on this River destetue of a regular Command. desire that I should take the Command of the whole as Brigadier General and wharas it is of necessity that it should be kown who are ready for action and who will command the several Regemnents & Companies, You will therefore ccall upon each Coll. on each side of Conecticut River as far as the lines of the Massachusetts—Bay for a returne of their several Companies specifying who commands, the Number, who are ready to turn out at minutes warning and to order each Coll. to make their Regements ready for action, You are not to reguard from what State or Convention the Officers are commission - ed, and that each Company have an allarmpost appointed, and in case of an alarm to wait at the Post for orders as it cannot be known whare the Enemy will attack. Doubtless the Enemy will make a fient in some Place of which I wish the People may be aware. I wish each man would equip himself with snow-shoes etc The returns to be made to me and Colo, Bellows or Colo, Hunt, and whareas it is my opinion if the Enemy make an attack this Winter on our Frontiers it will be at Otter Creek and Coos, the Regiments below Windsor west of the River if an attack is expected to march to Rutland.
