You ate in the greatest danger of finding yourself in the position of the man of whom it was said: 'Hit him hard t He ain't got no friends I' And the flashlight episodes are often so far removed from Western ideas and experiences that it is almost waste of breath to talk about them, for the West thinks it knows better, and flatly refuses to believe in them; or the truth of the tale is proved beyond all doubt, and the West is so immeasurably shocked that it loses all sense of proportion and power of judgment, and blubbers hysterically, as it did, for instance, over Alexander and Draga, For the West has a short memory, and has forgotten the things it did but a few generations ago when it, too, was young; how it carried the heads of fellow-countrymen on pikes and stuck their quarters about the town; almost, if not quite, within living
