328 THE BURDEN OF THE BALKANS, the hanjee was hospitably chasing the dust about the floor with a bundle of twigs when they were upon us. But Ghegaria is very differently managed from Toskeria. These police were a most gentlemanly couple of fellows. We were tired, they said, so any search that was required should be put off till to-morrow. As for me, I was most welcome. But with the best of intentions they enlarged upon the theme, and, as the language is a flowery one, it was an hour before we could think of food.
