I have no doubt that they were speaking the truth, and that it was the roughness of their lives that had so aged them, and Monsieur was really not more than forty, and his wife forty-two. About nine o'clock the company from outside all left, having first stood up and crossed themselves and wished each other good-night ceremoniously.
