Veteran Boxer Wins Draw With Lee Savold ST, LOUIS ~ ANP ~ Jim Richie, veterar local light heavy weight, held Lee Savold, Paterson,...N. J... to: a dtaw ina 10-rond bout there last - week at the Auditorium. Both fighters were active for the first round, Richie, who weighed 16 1-2 pounds less than: Savold, utilized his lighter weight to get advantage by moving. his greater. weight and strength to tie up Jim ir clinches. Richie~s right eye. was badly damaged by one of Lée~s left hooks early in the fight. After the fifth rownd, the action slowed considerably, Savold appeared to have an edge in each of the last fgur rounds. He rocked Richie with a left to the head, then brought up a powerful right uppercut to Jim's body that seemed to lift the local fighter off the floor. Savold failed to follow up this advanrrtage apparently thinking he had a suffiently safe mangin to win the fight, Lee express his displeasure with the draw verdict by saying he thought he had eight of the 10 rounds won. ~~But that guy can rur taster than Conn,~~ he added. Gene Farrell, one ~judge, voted 53 to 47 for Savold; the other, Al Graff, marked 53 to 47 for Richie, and the referee, Ray Palmer, called it 90-50. Their development must be based uport a well defined plan. Such a plan divided into five points is herewith given: 1. Selection of personnel; 2. Stere policy; 3. Stere system; 4. Salesmanship; 5. Specialized trainimg. Selection of Personnel: When filling a new position, as many applicants as possible should, be interviewed. The qualifications of each should be carefully evaluated and sometimes~ there should be two or more interviews with each applicant before a choice is made. Stere policy and operation: Authorities agree that the most important time in developing a new employe is the first~ day. They all have the same ambitions and desires; that being to make good. Therefore, or the first day you should provide them with inspiration. This can best be done by giving them.a personal word history of the business including your early experience and success. You. should tell them also, im detail, about the entire store policy and operations, impressing upon the employe that the fundamental policy iness -has remained the same since its inceptior and that it is his responsibility to: continue this policy. It should be further pointed out to him that his op ~| portunity and security of em ployment will increase steadily as he demonstrates his ability to presertt intelligently the store or office policy to old ~~ new customers alike. | It is. further sccibiaee that in the first day of training you give the employe a_ thorough explanation and demonstration of the operation~ of your store system, For ar example, you High Schools will assist U. of M. in victory. of the bus- }: should devote a minimum of one hour demonstrating customer approach, efficient, intelligent, and tactful serving of the customer, summarization of the transaction, recording the sales, wrapping the package, returning to the customer and expressing appreciation. Sach a~ procedure is vital in the building of a loyal, courteous. and aggressive employe. ~ Upon the completiom of the above demonstration it is advisable that you next have the employe completely handle a similar transaction. This may sound elementary, but if you are to have a system that works successfully, you must ~start with the basic elements of a sound system. Training never ceases: A part of a sales training, there should be conducted evenings sales meetings at regular intervals featuring new merchandise ard new sales programs. ~Give actual demonstration of the best methods of presenting and selling the merchardise, Advantage should be taken if factory and specialty salesman, through inviting them to. present short sales talks to your salés force. Items of. educational sales interest should be made available to aid the employes in their selftraining. programs, ploye will show some. qualifications which should give you the lead for. specialized training such as store management, department mariagement, advertising, sales. promotion, ete. The time amd. effort ~devoted to such a training program will be returned.a hundred fold as y'o ur. employes develop and become able to handle with complete satisfaction the hundreds of detailed matters that make up a successful business. Poultry Warning. When feed- consumption in the poultry flock. drops, a drop in egg production soon follows. Starting counter measures to keep feed consumption high as soon as intake begins to drop may ward off a drop in production. Use of lights and feeding wet mash or pellets have been found to be effective in maintaining high feed consumption and good production.. | PRORNOUNCED OKAY TO BOX Johnny Chat-| -ARNOLD SUGGESTION ACTED UPON NEW YORK ~ ANP ~ In a special editorial last week, we suggested that state boxing officials order an eye examination of Billy Arnold, Philadelphia fighter, to quiet ugly rumors about his eyes. ial The hard punching youngster who Riles Danny Rosati, local Italian, one day after our press déandline in the ~Madison Square Garden ring, was sent to the Manhattan Eye ~and Ea: hospital on Monday, for a complete eye examination by the 20 Century Boxing club bigwigs. This we consider ~a smart and timely move and it will be recalled that we have suggested this right along following the Daily Mirror expose by Dan Parker, sports editor of the New York tabloid. This:is.what Dr. F.C. Keil of that hospitél told newsmen: ~The fighter has 20-20 plus vision in the right eye and 20-20 minu? in the left. There is a central posterior cataract incipient in cha-acter, in the left eye, probably congential in origin. ~In view of the fact that no retinal damage is seen, it is not felt that engaging in professional boxing should ~ be of any gre's ler risk to his eyes than to those of any other normal individual.~ The Wills hospital, Philadelphia, had reported we year ago that Arnold had a:traumatic catatact and had called there. complaining of failing vision. Fear to Dn Parker, ~" Ar~ os this to sdy =: den~ t get ~hit much in the eyes anywiay. Ali my family has cetaracts.;~ So; readers, suppose you ~ the facts yourselves.,: BRANCH RICKEY SPEAKS: STRANGELY -, teste i chineun continues. to push all other, apont news~ to ihe: sidelines these days. Breaking his long silence with, respect - to Robinson~s racial origin being any. bar to becoming a Brook ~lyn Dodger, he chatted with Daily News writer Joseph Trimble | at great.length on Monday:4an.. ~3... teat Admitting there would be some ticklish moments connect-ed with~ the~recial question, ~dang ~ further defertding ~ himself. against any bias Because the Negro infielder was not a4dvanced to the Dodger roster after withing ~the [NT batting crown last season, Rickey was~ quite vocal, to put it mildly. Said the Mahatma: ~I want the boy to have ~a fair chance to make good, ~On thé matter of Montreal-Brooklyn spring season training plané~ Robinsén~s~ presence~ determining the plans to some bas a Rickey said: ~Y want him to play sane the Dodgers as dune ae as ~oe. sible. Fact is | don~t want to force him on Dodger players~and I would prefer to ~allow the situation~ to proceed along a natural course. By that | mean if the Brooklyn ball players see Jackie is good enough to make the team and that the manager lalso thinks he is, then they will come to accept him~of heir own accord." FUTURE, UP TO BROOKLYN PLAYERS Joe Trimble is known to the craft as a ~right guy~ which out of the siangy vernacular means an American who believes all of us ~should have equal rights under the constitution regardless of color or religious beliefs.~So' the matter of Clay Hopper. $ attitude came up on the agenda. Contrary to general and popular belief, Hopper, Montreal Manager, did not care for Jackie at the outset. According to Trimble~s report Robinson's presen- ~ ce was born by Hopper like a case of mumps.: As the training finished arid the league race got underway, the Mississippi-born Hopper grew quite fond of the colored: infielder. Late in the season, when the Royals had a tough game in Baltimore, Robinson went out of the lineup ~_ an injury which was expected to take a week to heal. Speaking of this incident in his powwow with Rickey, Trimble related this little known tale: ~The other players ask- _ ed Hopper if he was going to return ~Robbie to the linep in this | crucical game. Hopper agreed to if the player was willigg, to take the chance. Jackie was, land plexed seven innings before being forced to quit. es DIXIE WALKER, DUROCHER, PUZZLING ~ Harlem baseball fans read every line about their idol.Robin- | son with becoming fairness 4nd interest. They know what it~ means to carry around on broad; or slumped shoulders that notso-mythical ~ ~~black man~s burden.~~ Many of them talk to:me ~.. clay after day firing away at me with questions concerning the: bias or non-bias of Dodgers like Dixie Walker, Pistol Pete Reis-:, er, and the hot-tempered manager, Leo (The Lip) Durocher.; i unfailingly tell them that their guess is as gaod as mine any diay. We all remember, after a bit of research, what Brook- * lyn's most idolized player, Dixie Walker, had to say upon~ hearing that Jackie had been signed to a Montreal contract over~ a year'ago. We quote Walker verbatim here again: 6s. _~~ It's all right with me as long as he isn't on my team. 5 native of Birmingham. the city that produced the crack Birminzham Black Barons of the Negro baseball leagues, Dixie has~ fail ~With such a program the em~4 ed to change his attitude towards Negro players after a dozen years of ball on big time. So im the words of Branch Rickey! the men responsible for giving: star colored players like Robinson, Campanella, Wright, Donald Newcombe, etc., the chance~ organized baseball denied them since George Stovey~s rise ~back in the gaslight 80's says the players will determine his final statu POT ROURRI ees kid all sincerity want'to dk baseball fans this in- light ~of at.I have discussed tabove. Do you still think that trail blazers like Jackie Robinson in any field, sports, clergy, politics, labor, etc., have a bed ~of roses? Well, I do not. A fine looking boy, identical in color as was threeply-champion Henry Armstro is the new world~s bantamweight king, Harold Dade, product~ of Chicago's CYO. club setup, who recently scored a fistic upset by whipping classey Manuel Ortiz, coast Mexican, in a sensational 15 round title fray.: ~. Nat Holman offered to punch in the nose of Everett Shelton, University of Wyoming basketball coach, for the latter's Jewith-Negro utterances from the sidelines in a recent Madison Square Garden cage tilt in which CCNY, an interracial quintet, figured. The shame of it all-is that Wyoming U. has seen fit to - clear Shelton of all charges, now requesting that, Holman he disciplined for the counter-abusive language he uttered, A Teddy Randolph, the lad who made such nice showi against Joe Louis when the Bomber trained for the, late Conn fiasco, failed to punch-often enough in his bout against the colorful Cuban heavy, Omelio Agramonte, in a 1 0-rounder at the St. Nicholas ~arena Monday evening. Rev. John es Lge St. Martin's Episcopal church, is the new prexy of the Nati Negro Baseball league; few of the men in the street like the.appointment: I first heard of Rev. Johnson when he whs capiain of the Columbia university basketball team many years ago; later, in the "30's I served for four years on the New York Board of education as did Ald. Moore and Johnson. I still call him Cheol and he answers ~Hya-Alvin.~
