Gillespie squenanyyaceennueaseocungyysoanensesorggpnane~ THE HOUSING MUDDLE IN FLINT, AND. WHERE DOES THE NEGRO STAND by Mr. Chas. Eason and later corrected to show that during the emergency caused by the great war and since that only fifty-one houses have been built for Negroes, shows just where the Negro stands in the housing situation and that is outdoors. Although the Negro population has increased almost 100 per cent and his. opportunity to secure a house fit to live in.is less than ever. It is tragic that when. the Mayor of the City, appointed a committee om housing, he failed: to appoint a Negro to his committee. It puts us in an unfavorable position to always be contending: for something that from all manner of reason seems to be maturally ours, yet there is no other course when, the powers that be in the discharge of their duty fail for reason best known to them to include the*largest minority group in the city. It is time for us to consider those boys who were first called to the colors. Some had never had a steady job and could not have thought of securing a home. They offered their lives as a sacrifice for the security and the safe-guarding of this country. Many will never return, Some came back maimed for life. There are those who came back hail and hardy, we ask the question: Who has the right to deny them the hopes of a decent place to live in a country they have contributed~ so much to protect? It is hard to contemplate. It is harder to umderstand, yet that is what we have to. contend with. for that is ~~The Score.~~ THE ST. JOHN ST. Equal public education, It is becoming true in athletics, amd is today true in Flint Central athletics where today~s names are Oscar and Arthur Ingram and yesterday~ $s was Gene Vaughn, Al Johnson, Jessie Thomas, and-a host of others. I can oniy speak about Flint. Central and colored athletics have won varsity athletic letters at Centra] in Football, Basketball, Track. and other sports nearly every year since I came back to Flint in 1936. There are more Colored students at Northern, so its probably true there also. -; ~But unfortunately this equality of opportunity is mot always true in employment. You and I will not live long enough to see it completely realized ~ but just since the war.we've seen advances made. and I'm willing to. work for a continuation of these advances. In sports, the arts, in literature and in many fields this equality is being realized. ~Bifty years ago it was unheard. of to have a woman employee in an Office. JuSt one year ago it was urfheard of to have a colored stenographer in our Court House. Tomorrow 3 will quietly resume their duties in that same building. And Jimmie Johnson will go on duty as a deputy sheriff.: ~This opening up of job op of opportunity I seek. Each now have a chance to make or break their own~ records, Mrs. Bannister has earned the raise she received after six months trial. others can do likewise. ~As veterans we all fought equally. We each did what we were told to do, went where we were sent, and did the job assigned us as best we could. We all belong to the same post of the same veterans organization or at least we in AmVets do. Can~t we all join together to work to make equality of opportunity our contribution towards making Flint a_ better place in which to live, towards making Democracy work at home?~~ Attorney. The Fiint Spokesman congratulates these leaders for their efforts, and congratulates. the new appointees and wish ~them well in their pace-setting, and these job opportunities that no predecessor ever has held. Excellence of performance by these four, as well as Mrs. Bannister, will help others to follow their lead and help convince other employers that tpey can open up néw jobs and new fields to members of our community. A failure on their part would discourage others from opering up new fields of employment for competent colored applicants. Columbia Theatre Fridzy-Saturday. Jan. 17-18.
