Meaning of routine raids not understood by us or the police department. Due to the illegal raids of these various establishments it was brought to our attention that marty innocent victims were being herded to jail without cause. It is a known fact that. these, places have license to operate charter clubs and pool cooms and when patrons patronize these places solely for recreation are not responsible for what goes or other than. what the license of the establishment calls for: In cur interview with Chief Byers about this unjust treatment of these innocent people he said, ~If these raids are go- ' ing cu they are iliegal and that tie law enforcement oificers arat fault as weli as the operators of these gambling joints. They are being raided without Icgal search warrants, and that ~ the officers involved. are subject to civil suit by the innocent rersons concerned.~ lt interviewing a number of innocent persons arrested over. the week end it waz brought to our ~attention that a _ certain operator of an illegal gambling joint wanted all the inrocent victims as well as the guilty ones to plead guilty and those not doing so were left in jail. 2] bone to protect inmocent -vietims. It seems that the - only answer to this complicated problem is for innocent victims, when arrested without reason to file civil suit against officers in charge. The city clerk's office should show more dis~crétion in issuing licenses to these establishments which are using their license as a shield for illegal purposes. --As a conclusion we would like to ask a question, What~is the.Third Ward Commissiotier. ~| doing about this condition that exists in our community? Surely he feels ~that it is his duty to help those who put him in office.: Flint Negroes Need Leadership By popular request this ar ticle is reprinted from last week~s -issue. _ The question of today is ~ What is the matter with Flint~s Negro leaders? One doesn't meed to be a specialist in sociology. to diagnose Flint~s colored community illness. It is the lack of positive, aggressive and unselfish leadership. Fae It is an old custom of ours to delegate power of leadership to our more fortunate men such as doctors, preachers, lawvers, undertakers amd business men. We even accept~ blindly the white man~s deSignation of these men as our leaders. But the shingles of these men don~t automatically make leaders of them. Leaders are born. Since we accept the delegated leadership, we do have certain expectations of them. Now, our leaders are getting fat and lazy. They do~ ~nothing berause we ted, are lazy and: demand ~ nothing constructive of them. It is a known fact, if a carmer plant ard harvests ec from his soil each year without fertilization, that soil becomes poor. Flint Colored Community - is sick. Its back is sore. Its blood is amemic. Its~ leaders need to return something to the soil, 4
