OX MEAT AND POLITICS - Mr. Truman is faced-with a dilemma, the solution of which may détermine the outcome of the election in the Fall. The meat trust, made up of five large neat packingveoncerns, has set itself ta defy ihe American Government by refusing to obey tha OPA~ laws governing the price of meats. This law was _passed by the will of the American people, as expressed through their Senators and Representatives, and is binding or ought to be binding on every citizen alike. The Sherman Anti-Trust Law. chould be at once envoked to determine whether these large trusts are operating in restraint of trade, thus.constituting themselves a colossal monopoly.. The President should go still further and use ~the war-powers~which he still has~to break this combination, by either seizing all of the packing heuses and the great cattle breeding ranches in the interest of the common good (paying to the owners such prices as the De+ Control! Board may determine) or he should take the one step that. would be most effective~that of purchasing millions of pounds of beef from Mexico and Argentina. We notice with interest that since this suggestion has been made as coming from the President's cabinet, some meat has begun to appear on the counters of our local stores. DM she 6? Er aoctoaioecesoasoecoa salencessocoeloaioeloetoaloelonsooleeeeloeteetoeloclenloeloetensoeloelersoeceesees To illustrate the fear that such action would evoke, we note that the~arch protector of predatory wealth, Senator Taft of Ohio, speaking in the United States Senate, cried out with stung hoyror that such ~~a thing would be silly and disastrous to the cattle raisers.~. The soundest policy for President Truman to follow is to take the opposite position to that taken by Senator Taft. The Senator speaks for the vested interests; the President should speak for the common people. Senator Taft wants OPA scrapped so that his vast investments and the investments of the gorup he represents may have free play in exploiting the. masses of the common people., itis our prediction that if the masses of the people should vote out of office the present semi-liberal Congress and place in its stead a conservative Congress, the cry for meat in the future will be met by the gift of serpents on the part of the reactionary Congress. The Common people want OPA retained so that their rents and their food may not become exorbitant. They want social security retained; they want the bank: deposit law; they want Federal aid in education; they want Federal Housing projects to take; them out of the slums, where their children die at a greater rate than those who own the buildings of the slums. These gaifis can only be retained if the Presidant takes a firm: hand and speaks~ often to the|. American people in protection of these hard won reforms. '.. Mr. President! You have an opportunity to break the meat trust that has designedly planned to create this shortage and bring it to an end. The reforms that were instituted by your distinguished and worthy predecessor must be retained. Say to them, as a great French general once said, ~~You shall not pass~; then summons the tremendous resources of the masses of the American people to your side and fight the enemies of prograts shall be decisively defeated. ~From The Buffalo Guardian nerectectestosteetoctos~ % Yo! Pls Pane who eek: -+to be the least but.to this oid world meen the most, are those~who are long suffer: ng and kind and not afraid of the Holy Ghost. The ghosts all men should fear are those that lurk among the victims of debauchery and greed, and suddenly get men down, and one their souls eternally feed. Men and women may not appear disfigured on the outside, but those who do not figure Christ in their lives, have an impairment inside they cannot hide. The trouble with this sad old world today is, that men look at color, influence money and flash... which without character is only trash. Thus youth~s only justification for attending school is, to learn enough daily to keep him from becoming a fool, and in his early church life defeat. the devil in making of him a tool. PHONE 9-1005 ~ statesman, is the silence that now reigns in India. ~ After an inconsequential series of riots, things are séttling down in India; and the noise we do not hear is the serious attempt of the Hindus and Moslems to get together. They are in a huddle. They are about to realize that, they must be free together or be enslaved separately! Their. courses are plain and there is the it will be farewell England i in India. When Jinnah and hits Moslem League agrees to make some compromise with Nehru and his Indian Congréss, things are going to happen in [ndia and the said happenings will mean the end-of British rule in India as well as in Egypt, Burma, Palestine and Ireland. And so today the hopes for peace are not centered: about the discussion tables of the United Nations organization, but in India where Jinnah and Nehru are on the verge of an agreement that will callenge the world rule of the white man, When we wish how soon ~this happy consummation may transpire, we are wishing good for the British empire no less than liberation for millions of oppressed people. What is more, when Britain's stranglehold on its imperial possessions will have been broken, this world will be on the road to peace in a way it cannot approach today. The hypocrisy, the chicanery, the duplicity, the direful diplomacy, the blistering deceitfulness the enshrouded lies, the brazen resort to brute forces so proficiently practiced by Great Britain breeds a justifiable distrust among the nations that make peace at present impossible. Peace that is lasting ~is not being made in Paris and London and Washington but in Calcutta and Bombay. The propitious aspects of this whole colonial development is that Negroes have a stake. The more freedom there is in the world the more freedom will the Negro enjoy. It is quite conceivable that the Negroid races will be the last liberated but liberated they will be. Herein lies a challenge to the Negroes of the United States. itual power is the extent to which our liberation will be postponed. Jesus had no armies and armadas but he defeated the Roman empire. Gandhi has no armies and armadas but he is about to break the back of the British empire. Is it not about time for Negroes to dig in spiritually? Gandhi never sang songs of hate, but he has about won his point. Today Churchill is singing the ~dissolution blues~ for the British empire when he says that the empire has shrunk to about one-fourth its former size.
