Carruthers, prominent Chicagoan, is president of the Laymen~s council. E. F. Durr, Birmingham, is general secretary of lay activities, He was one of the four CME general officers who received the unanimous vote of the entire conference for reelection for the 1946-1950 quadrennium, _ Having welded themSelves into an articulate body, the lay-.men affected legislation favor able to laymen ~ equalization of lay representation in the annua! conference with that of the clergymen; raising of the status of the laymen council to recogni. tion; and revision of the constitution of the department of lay activities. Daily Mirror, is at the same time an erudite sort of writer and thinker. Brother ~Danyell~ said during the interim that we (ycu readers) haven't talked with each other personal.y like we do, that JACKIE ROBINSON, stormy petrel of organized baseball, has a chance to make the big leagues next year. Parker was not writing his opinion mind you. He was recanting the meaty portion of a confab held between (hold your lung-juice)~the Mississippi-born piiot of the Montreal Club for whom. Robinson toils, and a capable judge of basebali matters. Manager Hopper (that~s his name) avows as how the dark compiexioned kid who blazed a sport trail unfor8ettable during four years at UCLA has endeared himself to sports mans ot all races wherever his tcam has played. I have reams of admiration for white men~and women of Mr. Hopper's status~believe me, dear readers. No such unAmerican institutions as the infamous KKK, Christian Fronters etal have the slightest chance of survival if we can continue to enlist on our side Americans like Montreal's Hopper whether they hail from Mississippi or~Times Square, New York. SHADES OF DISMOND AND WILLIAMS Recently ~we devoted most of our column to extoliing the cinder path accomplishments of the University of Illinois~. crack Ku Klux Klan and _ the. race baiters are working at fever heat in Georgia to invalidate the.claims of Negroes for~ parin the state Democratic primary. A well known Auburn ave nue~ man was asked to file in the gubernatorial race by friends of one of the ex-governor. candidates. He is now making a jok> of the offer, There were rumors: that another unknown man was to be in the race for state~ commissioner of labor in opposition to Ben T, Huiett, The worst type of this political skulduggery was bared the day of the closing of entries to the state race, when two men, one white and the other colored, visited the home of Mrs, Nell Hall Jackson. Only two hours before the deadline, the men persuaded Mrs, Jackson to file for a post on the, Democratic Executive committee from the third ward, which has a~ preponderance of Negro electors. Mrs, Jackson withdrew from the race immediately after a Klan. Race Baiters Busy In Georgia Politics -ATLANTA ~ ANP ~ The, conference with Negro Democratic leaders. Democratic club officials declared that it. was a scheme of demagogues to frighten white voters over the state and probably influence them to support the Ku Klux Klan candidates, Race Union Delegate to All-White Town PORTLAND, Ore. ~ ANP ~ For the first time in the history of unionism in this city, a Negro has been elected by the Scalers, Painters, Decorators, and Auto Painters of American delegate to their state convention to be held in Astoria, beginning June 10, as The delegate, Chesley E, Cor- |,town to work. bett, will probably be the only Negro in Astoria during the week of the convention. HEAD OF BUSINESS ARRANGEMENT ~ COMMITTEE West Indian quartermiler. One has to recall the pristine greatness of Dr. Binga Dismond when he was coholder with Ted Meredith, white, U. of P., of the 440-yd. record (around one turn) of 47,and 2-5 seconds. ~fclipsing the time of the immortal J. B. Taylor, Binga Dismond and others, came the era that produced such as Arlhie Williams, greatest ofthem all in the opinion of many;.Long John Woodruff, now a school teacher in New York City; Phil Edwards (quarter and 880 specialist); Jimmy (the great) Herbert, Johnny Borican ~could run a sizzling quarter also-, Cecil Cooke, Syracuse strongman,.that Phi Beta Kappa key quartermiler (from a Califronia ~ college) whose name | just do not recall, very fair-skinned, and a ~~running foo.~ if ever I saw one; and Elmore Harris, present national 600 and 500 yard Ihampion from Shore Road A.C. fromerly ~of Morgan Col.ege. I confidently feel that the 46 second flat quarter-miler might hop along any time during the next 12 months in this atomic age of surprises and speed technologists in all fields of endeavor~honest injun. EZZARD CHARLES RISES AGAIN During the past fortnight the fictic stock of one Ezzard Charles, Cincinnati, and jolting Jersey Joe Walcott. Camden, N.J., skyrocketed to the top of the column. Charies, rated a few seasons back a sure-fire 175 pound champion, fell by the wayside in the interim and no one figured he'd do much along the fistic highways. His recent victory over Archie Moore, a great fighter measured by any and all standards, shoots young Ezzard right up there with Billy-Fox as frontline contenders for Gus. Lesnevich's crown.: Walcott, whose Christian name is Arnold (whipping) Cream,~beat the highly touted Lee Oma, a ~white Russian~ by way of Detroit, into a state bordering collapse Friday, May 24, at Madison Square Garden before an $88,000 house. [| got a kick out of the white (and some colored) writers who em MATTHEW BURGESS, Chicago, Illinois, Chairman of Business Arrangement Committee for the Meeting of the National Sunday School and Baptist Training Union Congress to meet in the Windy City, June 17th to 23, 1946 Mr. Burgess who is also - treas-. uret of the congress states that everything is in readiness for this mammoth. gathering of Baptists, oes ee ployed virtually my very own words in praise of Walcott. Outstanding Clown Players CJLUMBUS, Ohio~(APNS) REESE (Goose) TATUM, the fancy fielding first baseman returns to Red Bird Stadium on Thursday, June. 6, when the Clowns battle the Havana LaPatomas. Buster Haywood is expected to be back in action for the Clowns, WOMAN DIES IN YARD About 11:45 p. m, May 27, Nora Blackwell, 906 Mt. Ver non Avenue, while_in the rear of 332 N. Monroe Ave., fell in the yard, she was dead when No. 1 Inhalator Squad arrived. Death apparently was ~ from natural causes, The body was removed: to the Whittaker Funeral Home. oo8 BUSTER HAYWOOD The only thing I saw out of focus was the fact I had my say in pre-battle fashion which took some little amount of || courage considering Lee Oma is the nominated ~standin~ for both Conn and Louis. Few fighters punch with the authority the Camden veteran does and if you doubt this, find Lee Oma and he'll convince you pronto. Father of six children, ranking official in his community church, Walcott was making his first Garden appearance and incidentally,~receiving his first chance to make some important money. Like Elmer Ray, |a tough slugger whom Walcott has faced once, Tami Mauriello'wanted no part of the Jersey jolter who ed Joe Baksi, Jimmy Bivins and Lee Oma. Only Conn and Louis remain and it~s 20 to one that the Jersey demon won't get either one until he has cleaned up Jack Dempsey~s Elmer Ray (once more); Mauriello, Bivins, again, etc.,etc.~ad infinitum. What boxing really needs is a few courageous as well as fair minded solons. |Joe Louis Gives $200 to Save Man From Georgia Chaingang By Irvine I. Real-) izing her nervousness, Joe assured the little. woman, who stands scarcely five feet, two inches, that ~I won~t hurt you, I'll help you,~ He listened attentively to her story.and read a letter she had from his mother, suggesting that Cet contact. the campion for help. Gazing sympathetically, he wrote the check for $200 and assured her she had a great cause ~ to fight for, Everybody should help save any rally or affair of any nature to help raise the necessary funds to fight your battle, I admire your courage to fight in the face of such odds.~ The New~ Jersey Supreme Court recently rejected Powell~s application against extradition, His defense committee, headed by Fred R. Clark, and Irvine R, Turner, has already filed application to the court of: errors and appeals through the defense lawyer, Atty. Thomas Potter, Princeton, N. J., who ~entered the case two years ago after the NAACP had declined to act on the grounds Powell~s case lacked merits for adequate defense. - once was Louis~ sparmate. And his references to Tunney were in the nature of un-Sunday School language. Billy said for example, ~he~s a fine (censored) stuffed shirt to be calling me a joke of a challenger, That big (censored) has gotta lotta guts calling anybody a joke, when Billy Conn Wants to Whip Ex-Champ, Gene Tunney | everybody in the fight game knows his background, And how he won the title from old Jack Dempsey, who~d been outta the ring more~n three years; and how he kept the title on a fluke ~on a long count, Maybe the four-flushin~ (censored) got jealous because people said somebody besides him was a good boxer. Well, ~he~s lookin~ for trouble and he~ll get it,~ Then Billy~s manager got in a few choice words on the matter of the referee winding up with the admonition that if the ref pulled Billys arms, touched hin. or ~something like that,~ he would ~step out of the corner and punch that referee right in the nose.~ Youth of National CHICAGO, Idd. ~ The National Baptist Sunday School and BTU Congress convening in Chicago, June 17th to- 23, will observe its traditional Booker T.
