WASHINGTON, D.C.~The old Virginia law requiring Negroes on buses to be seaied separate.y from whites, in interstate travel, was ruled unconstitutional, by a recent Supreme court decision in a 6-| decision. In his dissent, Justice Harold H. Bur:on declared that the decision could invalidate similar laws in nine other states. The contest is being sponsored by the Flint Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Flint Baseball Commission. Local share of the gate receipts will go to the Commission's Junior Boys Baseball program. FRILEY NOMINATED FLINT, Mich, ~ APNS ~Mr, George Friley, Flint business man and civic leader, was mandatcrily nominated as a eandidate for commissioner of the 3rd Ward, A Spokesman of. the Community Civic League pointed cut that Mr. Friley~s -name will not appear upon the primary ballot as the city is- reluctant to go to the expense of placing the name upon the ballot since there will not ybe a contest. However the nam? will be on. the election ballot in November; BITTER FIGHT The reactionaries staged a bitter fight in trying to sitymie Friley~s.. campaign,.. It..segmed that their very watchword was to ~Step Friley.~ The community was stirred more than at any time in the memory of political Students here, At the Jast minute there was a great rush upon the part of new comers to register so that they can qualify to vote in the coming election, The very fact that there Gifford~s Default, Rev. Vaughns~ Failure to File; Results in No Contest ~had been a charge by the oppo sition that Communist were aiding Friley~s campaign and the fact that it was alleged that certain parties were intimidated by a threat of a poSsible resurrection of.the infamous Ku Klux Klan, whetted the interest of citizens who otherwise would have been indifferent. LEADERS SATISFIED Civic league leaders expressed themselves as being satisfied with the results. It is lamented, however, that there were those in the community who possess a degree of prominence becaus2 of their connection who failed to support Friley, They were within their rights, but it is considered that the role that has been played by our leaders who have been willing to work against the -best interest of the colored ~people: is a thing of the past, It should be considered by all that those who work against the best interest of the community, invite the apes of the community. PHILADELPHIA ~ ANP ~ Morrell Burgess, 32, was shot Monday night by police who mistook him for an automobile thief. Finley Wilson, grand exalted ruler. Mr. Wilson attended the State association here and it was during one of the day~s sessions (May 22) that he told the more than 75 delegates present of the ~threat,~ He said that many of the exbrothers of the New York lodges that are now suspended, are ~out to get him,~ and he presented photostatic copies of let ters: written by them to other members of lodges throughout the country, One of the letters told of the ~secret~ meeting called _ last month in New York, which was presided over by one of the exexalted rulers, and a complete copy of the minutes of that meeting was also in the hands of Wilson,: ~ Parts of the ituudes told of the coming plans of the insurgents. in regards to the grand lodge convention to be held in August and one of the speakers there said that ~Wilson must. be gotten, anything short of murder,~ and that he would continue his efforts in fighting for his dethroning this summer. Detroit, has been acting in the capacity of General Man-~ ager, The growth of the syndicate has been almost phenomenal, with 10 progressive news {papers representing various sec tions of the country, now dotting the newspaper chain,~ At a recent meeting of the Board of Directors, Mr, Bonds was elevated to the responsible position of executive editor of The Detroit Journal, and its affiliate newspapers, along with his duties as general manager. Mr. Bonds will leave within a few weeks for New York City, where he will confer with nationa! representatives in the advertising field in the hope. of landing some large contracis for A. P.
