Urban League of Flint Makes Public Letters Showing Failure April, 6, 1946 The Honorable E, C, McLogan - Mayor of the City of Flint City Hall Flint 3, Michigan Dear Mayor McLogan: In line with our telephone conversation of several days ago, I discussed with my Board the question you raised concerning the opinion of the League toward the use of ~the contemplated housing units by both groups.. The matter was referred to the Health and Welfarce Committee. The Health and Welfare Commiitee of the Lea gue has instructed me to give the following opinions: 1. That a housing project operated by a public authority should be run on a democratic basis and withou: disctimination. 2.. That a. prominex-: be appointed to the authority, ~ 3. That a location be selecied which would cause the N>gro Housing amount..of friction between | groups, 4. That the Health and Wel fare Commitiee duly appointed to further discuss the mater. Griggs CHICAGO ~ ANP ~ Edwaid Jones, millionaire sportsman head of Chicago~s southside policy game, who was released by kidnappers recently upon payment of a reputed $100,000, last week was miSsing again, The current disappearance was thought to be due to a pending grand jury investigation cf his five-day imprisonment by abductors, which Jones faces upon hig return to the city. Conflicting versions of Jones~ return to the southside after his abduction were given last week by four so-called eyewitness, all of them denying the suave policy king~s story that'he had just ~released when he was picked up on Friday, May 17, by his brother, George, accompanied by police, All fou" persons testified that they had seen Jones on May 16, the day the ransom was paid, although he didn~t report to police until May 17. One of the informants was said to have seen Jones entering the bathhouSe he operates about 4 p. m, on May 16. According to this version, Jones ~was dishevelled Means Wins Scholarship Member of ~ High School Music Department for the past three years, an activity honor graduate. Mr, Means also won 2nd place in the Michigan State Vocal Festival Association, This marks the first time that any colored has 2ver been admitted to the special course, The Department also offered- to send Mr; Means as the first Negro to attend the National Music Camp, at Inierlochin. On the basis of these ~sasha police are inclined to believe that Jones was released long. before they were notified, pethaps even. before the ransom was -paid, Police watched payment of the ransom to the supposed abductors, but made no arrests in an ~agreement with Jones~ family to secure his safety. Jones, who has been in seclusion shortly after his release, is believed to have become wary when the Chicago Crime com See~Policy King~Page 3 Mistaken As Burglar, Mother Shot by Son ~ MEMPHIS ANP Mrs Sally Harris, living on Highway 51 near Lucy road, died here last week at John Gaston hospital after Teceiving shotgun wounds in her stomach ~ fired by her 13 year old son, who thought she was a burg. lar,: oF Before dying the 24 year old mother told deputies She was unable to awaken the boy and Pried ~open a window to. enter. her home; The frightened youth grabbed the family shotgun and fired before she could identify herself.
