VOLUME 7~NUMBER 49 RACE Will Fig ht For Seized Strip By. Chester Higgins Determined not to take without challenge, the récent Michigan Supreme Court decision which upheld by a four-to four split, the annexation of a strip of their village by Dear _ born Township, Inkster residents of both races formed a citizens committee last week, to lay plans for carrying their | fight into the federal courts. Lafayette Allen, Sr. well-; which upheld a lower court known businessman and | ruling that the strip, about two owner of the big Inkster supermarket bearing his name, was appointed temporary chairman of the interracial committee at an overflow meeting in the gynasium of Inkster High School. ~This is the rottenest thing that has ever happend to us out here,~ he declared. ~We're going to go to Federal Court and fight it ~..we~re going to do this, because we must.~ Paul MeCartney, white, was named temporary co-chairman. The group will meet this week to elect permanent officers and finalize plans for their fight. The meeting last week was attended by more than 700 citizens, white and Negro, all up in arms over what one of them described as ~the criminal grab~ of part of Inkster by Dearborn Township. It was sponsored by the local chapter. of the NAACP of ~which Roy Wilson is president. ~The issue. has. been. a smould a ing one since June 2 residents of the anneked ~strip~ along Michigan Avenue~voted to become incorporated with Dearborn Heights. The rest of Inkster residents had no voice in the incorporation and loss of part of their village. The overflow audience heard various leaders, including NAACP State President Edward Turner, urge the citizens to continue to -fight for their rights in the annexation dispute. Two issues are central in the dispute. It is bitterly argued that the portion of Inkster Village to be sliced off and added to the north and south parts of Dearborn Township for: the new city is ~a lily-white district.~ The whole question of the status of the large number:of Negro children (about one-third of the enrollment) attending the recently built Robichaud High School will be uncertain if the annexation is upheld by federal courts. Some residents argue that ~this strip is being used as a buffer to keep Negroes out of the _proPosed new. po member of the cobtites: ~chair-. man: of ~the village Zoning Com-: mission and an accountant at Ford Motor Co., pointed out that ~this piece of land brings in more than $150,000 a year in revenue right now. In a few years it will bring in much more because most ~of the industry in the village is located there.~ ~: Since Inkster has recently gone in debt to build.a civic center, a school, etc., loss of this revenue is staggering if not dis asterous. Both white. and Negro |; citizens. alike know they'll be taxed heavily to make up for the loss. ~ Justice George Edwards, who ruled for Inkster ~ as did Justices Theodore Souris;.Thomas M. Kavanaugh and Talbot Smith ~ declared the incorporation did violence to the rights of other Inkster residents and thus was a violation of the equal rights provision of the 14th Ammendment the United States constitution. Armed with this opinion the citizens hope to get redress in federal court. Chief Justice John R. Dethmers and Justices Eugene Black, Harry + F.
