College,. Texas, who have been named _ national intercollegiate football champions for 1958. Jones Thinks Cardinals Will Be 'Top Contender~ ~FAIRMONT; West Va. (Special) ~Sam Jones, the National League~s strikeout king, is quite optimistic about the 1959 St. Louis Cardinals. ~- Jones wintering: at his home at Monongah, West Virginia, says emphatically he believes the Red Birds will be ~top contenders~ this season. ~The 33-year-old right hander was the second Cardinal signed to a contract this year. Smith University~s basketball team gained its fifth and sixth victories against only three losses this season with triumphs over Livingstone College and Saint Augusting s College last week. With Joseph Crenshaw and Clarence Barnes, a pair of eagle-eyed sophomores showing the way, the Herd walloped Livingstone, 61-60, here Tuesday night and then: laced Saint Augustine~s at Raleigh, 76-56, Friday night. Crenshaw, scoring at a 19.3 gait, hit for 47 points while Barnes was getting 36 in the two contests. A 21 point. scorer in his freshman year last season, Barnes is slowly rounding into top shooting form and has pulled his average up to 15.8 on 111 points for seven contests. Crenshaw has tallied 116 in six games. In addition to the one-two salvo cof Barnes and Crenshaw, Smith has three other players who are seering well. Junior John Crawford, sophomore George Johnson and freshman Richard Gainés are just under the double figure, or 10-point per game average. As a unit, the Smith crew is averaging 72.3 on 651 points for seven games as compared to a well-knitted defense which has held the opposition to only 544 points for a 60.4 average. The Bulls are ahead of their adversaries in the vital rebound department, 326-271, for an.average of 46.5 as against 38.7 for the opponents. instructional program at the~ ~fourth ~anmial school.
