In last week~s edition Herman Hamilton frankly commented upon the fitness and qualifications of one of the candidates for the N.A.A.C.P. presidency. To Hamilton his duty must have seemed clear~not to have done so would have been a failure in a duty owed himseit as well as to the membership. The Annual Convention, of the N.A.A.C.P. in 1958 re affirmed its resolution that the membership of communists, fellow travelers and communist sympathizers are not accepted by the association. That being the case, any person running for office within the N.A.A.C.P. should have clean |. hands in this respect. Should an individual with.a suspicion shrouyding his name be elected to office in the N.A.A.C.P. it would not only violate the above mentioned Policy, but it would also tie the hands of the N.A.A.C.P. in every fight in which it might be engaged. The first battle would be the ~red~ issue, diverting attention from the real issue of civil rights. This in truth is exactly what pseudo-liberals refuse to see and just what the ~reds~ want us to do. The communist objective is to ~show up~ the injustices and problems in American. life ~ not to seek a solution. Therefore they raise issues, yell loud and wildly, but carefully avoid any real attempts at a solution. The Negro is used as a tool and his cause suffers. It has wisely been said ~ it is hard enough to be black without being labeled ~red~ too. Individuals may differ with the Resolution on Com_munism. No one can dispute it is the Law of N.A.A.C.P. passed in Annual Convention and binding upon the Branches. Attempts to avoid it leads only to division and pitfalls.
