Meeting in Detroit, the Commission also heard from its staff that~ recent informal conferences. in Muskegon and Lansing had brotight committments to consider ~applicants on merit in the retail trades.. Among the cases in which the Commission accepted~. adjustments worked out by investigating commissioners and _ staff were those involving discharge. from a hospital ~in!the western part of the state, the adoption of a policy of referral on merit by a large, multi-office employment agency, and the.admission of non-white journeymen by a major craft union. Commenting on the agreéments, Deputy Director William M. Seabron said: ~today~s settlements represent a_ particularly wide variety of claims; they involve the act of hiring, discharge, employment referral and union practices.~ He cited.the settlement with the craft union| as a particularly significant development, sayin gthe union involved was -a ~most respected member of the fraft union, group whose: action: is ~certain to be closely watched. and perhaps soon emulated -by other such unions, many-~ of whom have ~shown a sincere interest in end ing an~ practices which might be in c8ntravention of the FEP Act.~ The Commission learned that several of its volunteer employment advisory councils have programmed ~industry-oriented~ meetings with business groups to discuss employment policies particularly with respect to upcoming seasonal:hirings.
