In announcing Mr. Curtis said _ that he is sounding the- clarion eall ~To make~ the 3rd Ward First.~ First in respect; first in representation and first in the rights that are inherent to American citizenship. Mr. Curtis pointed out that his background and qualifications are ~HERMAN CURTIS aoe * ~ * such that his election will insure the 3rd ~Ward residents that they well have all proper municipal services at the proper time and with the proper attitude.: His presence on the commission will be a guarantee that representation~ for citizens, not special. interests, will be given. He shall stand with all organi-~ ~zations and individuals who are *dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal and will move forward vigorously and forcefully until this goal has been attained. Mr. -Curtis worked his way through Illinois College of Chiro-pody by holding Civil Service posts in the U. S. Treasury Department and the Veterans Administration. He received his Doctor~s- degree in 1949 and opened his Flint, office where he practiced four years. Mr, Curtis is presently employed at Fisher Body where he is very active in Local 58].. affairs. He is Recording Secretary, District Committeeman, Chairman of Fair Practices Committee, Executive Board member and a delegate to the Greater Flint Council. Mr. Curtis~ community activities include membership in the NAACP, Urban League and Dewey PTA. He is a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church and teaches a teen-age School class. Mr. Curtis is a World War I veteran. He is married to the former Leslie Lewis of Grand Rapids, Michigan. They have four children, Lindsey, Christopher, Cydney and Herman III. DONATE $500 TO. A. A: ~Banks was looking forward to the day ahead in Flint, arriving here from Detroit where he is pastor of the. Second Baptist 4 Church, he planned.to: attend the Baptist Training Union - Rev. Banks related the fol-{ lowing incident regarding his ~Treception in Flint; he drove into the Autorama Motel on _ Dort Highway.and asked for accom-, |modations. The clerk replied that she would have to ~check with the manager~ as to whether or not there were any vacancies. George Turner, manager stated to Rev. Banks that he was filled up and would be for several fays to come. He then directed the minister to Hilltop House, a ~Negro boarding house on Lapeer Street. As Rev. Banks prepared to _|leave a_white man entered and asked if there were any yacan cies. The clerk told him yes, and as the manager spoke to her in an undertone she mentioned something about his reservation. The man made no reply. Rev. IN BRIEF CUT FOR NO REASON ~ Raymond Pierce, 37, 1112 Leith St., reported that he would sign a coniplaint against his common law wife. Last Saturday. while in a northend bar, Pierce confends she came into the. bar, walked up behind him and w~ihout any argument takiny p*1-9.:| started cutting him on te arms with a small paring knife. He was taken to Hurley,H*spital in a private car and treatc4 for a cut on the left arm and several cuts on the right arm. A number of stitches were re: quired to close the wounds. He states his left arm is paralyzed and he is unable to use it. % % * ATTACKS OFFICER WITH BOTTLE While Officer Hugo Von Brockderff was arresting a 24-year old man for breach of peace at 2:19 a.m. Sunday, a struggle ensued. Robert Basham, 29, who. came from a darkened <itchen. attacked and struck the officer with a beer bottle. Lip aa ot: IN Endorses: Prexy Action At a meeting Sunday, ~May 18, at the Pioneer Hall, the Membership of the Flint Branch of the NAACP passed the following~ resolution: case at eve WHEREAS: The NAACP has attention and adequate family, and and this regularly scheduled: and its membership. WHEREAS: The membership of the NAACP has been kept fully informed on the developments in the Richards membership meeting, and gained further confidence of the Negro citizens of Flint by its uncompromising position on this case, and its endeavors to get public protection for the Richards WHEREAS: The nature of the violence in such cases presupposes at all times emergency action ffust be taken, WHEREAS: Between the hours of 11 p.m. on~ April 29 and 10 a.m. on April 30 emergency action was needed to bring this matter before the County Board of Supervisors ~ or otherwise postponed for a full month. THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: that the membership, in business meeting, go*on rec ord commending its President, Herman Gibson, its | Legal Redress Committee Chairman, Herman Hamilton, and Co-Chairman Marshall Burns, George Johnson, Co-Chairman of the Educational Committee, and Edgar B.
