SPACE WAGONS ~ The De Soto Explorer is loaded at
the Chrysler Corporation missile plant along side of the
Army~s Redstone missile, an adaptation of whichg helped
the Jupiter C push the first U.'S. satellite into orbit. The

were rocketing the industry along toward the day of the

three-car family.

According to industry statistics, the number of families
owning three or more cars has
nearly doubled in the last seven)
years.

Among De Scto owners, 41.5
per cent own two or more cars,
and half of these owers are driving statien wagons.

~The popularity cf station wagons has been a phenomenon in
the industry,~ according to J. B.
Wagstaff, De Ssto Division vice
president. ~In 1940, they account~ed for less than one per cent of
total industry. sales. But by 1957
station wagons had leaped to
an impressive 14.5 per cent of
production.
