CHICAGO ~ For the first time
in history, the New York Yankees will enter spring training
with more than one tan player
on the roster.

Versatile Elston Howard will be
starting his fourth season with
the team, and Harry Simpson, acquired last June in~a trade with
Kansas City, will, be starting his
first full season with the. perennial American League champions.

It is not casihithe. however, how
either of these players. fit into
Manager Casey Stengel~s plans

Howard proved useful last season as a stand-in behind the plate
for Yogi Berra. He was also valuable in the outfield platooning
by Ol~ Case. He eventually wound
up playing~ a bit of first base.
And,.of course; he was used asa
pinch-hitter frequently.

It is impossible that this season will see him~ being ised more
as a catcher. But if Stengal~s
weak spot in leftfield is not filled
adequately -but promising rookies, it~s likely that he will. resort to platooning again. In.that
