FEB. 15, 1958 4 Redwings~ Corner By DON RAPHAEL Among the brightest pro-! spects in the Red Wing organization is blond, personable, right wing Billy McNeill. Now in his third season as a professional, McNeill appears to have all of the attributes necessary~ to establish him as a National League starter if he can absorb coaching and direct his to the Memorial Cup finals, arid that year played one game with the ~professional Flyers under a tryout arrangement. The - following fall he was transferred to Hamilton where he thrived on Junior O. H. A. com petition so well that he turned]. professional when he was still 19, entering the salaried ranks with the Flyers rather than playing out his final year as a junior. season at Edmonton, although like most freshmen he was far _|of the season. - He was again slated for return to the Flyers a year ago, However, his strong play in preseason exhibition games won him a chance with the Wings, and fe was called to the~ National League during the first month of play, He started with a rush, but as in his preceding professional year, ~tapered off in the ~later stages. He finished the season riding the bench. McNeill~s sical abilities; his weakness: is the lack of proper self-direction and harnessing. However, he still rated as a/man with a great potential once the two can be placed in proper combination. McNeill is married, and make his permanent residence: 1 in his native Edmonton. BILL MCNEILL energies toward self improvement and the exploitation of this gifts. YANKEES as | TAN PLAYER CHICAGO ~ For the first time in history, the New York Yankees will enter spring training with more than one tan player on the roster. Versatile Elston Howard will be starting his fourth season with the team, and Harry Simpson, acquired last June in~a trade with Kansas City, will, be starting his first full season with the. perennial American League champions. It is not casihithe. however, how either of these players. fit into Manager Casey Stengel~s plans for this season. 22 1. ~._ Howard proved useful last season as a stand-in behind the plate for Yogi Berra. He was also valuable in the outfield platooning by Ol~ Case. He eventually wound up playing~ a bit of first base. And,.of course; he was used asa pinch-hitter frequently. It is impossible that this season will see him~ being ised more as a catcher. But if Stengal~s weak spot in leftfield is not filled adequately -but promising rookies, it~s likely that he will. resort to platooning again. In.that case, Howard will.see plenty of action in the outfield. when the AUTOMOBILE GENESEE COUNTY % ps Ae ~~ a rYankees are facing southpaw JE R P "4 DAVI D |: | IN~ D Le os ). | eae hace ' Scores 1400 Points With a 17-point. ~eftort. against the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils, at Hackett Field 4, Mike Butka, ~Tech~s 17-yéar old freshman scoring ace, became the second player.in the school~s cage history ~to~ top 400 points during a single ~season.
