It ~has been many a year since the senate had a civil righits-bill on the calendar. Who is going to try to hide behind the inaction of a committee now? The measure was put on the calendar without referring it to the Judiciary Committee by a vote (roll call) 45-39. A similar civil rights bill has been bottled and stopped up for months with the Committee. Sen. James Eastland, Mississippi Democrat is ~head of the Judiciary Committee and has openly declared himself as an opponent to the civil rights measure. Michnigan~s Sen. Poiter, Republican and McNamara. both voted with the majority. Thirty four Democrats and five Republicans voted in favor of sending the measure to the Committee, Should this measure have been voted to go to the committee it would ~have been subject to Vilibuster by | southerm, oppgnents when recommending it'to the senate calendar... Every effort will be made to get action before the} } close of Congress but in the event that adjournment! comes before the measure is brought up, it will be at the start of the session next January. Welcome | 48th Annual NAACP Convention | We welcome the 48th Annual Convention of the NAACP. Tuesday marked the event of a remarkable opening session - which is being held here this week at the beautiful Veterans Memorial Building. It was. certainly made known by the mammoth crowd, delegates, representing almost all ofthe States in the Union that the NAACP ~Fight for Freedom~ means business. The way in which the delegates expressed themselves from the floor made every one present know that each and every one there represented a body of people. The report of the conference procedure submitted from the platform created interest from the very start, Tuesday~s program ~was only the beginning of conven- | tion organization meetings, reports, regional méetings for organization, mass meetings, etc. The Convention will be in progress from June 25th through June 30. One of the mass meetings will be held Friday night. The highlight of the meeting will be the presentation of the Spingarn Medal to the Rev. Martin L. King |{ of Montgomery for his untiring efforts toward better race relations. Another meeting for the general public will be held Sunday at Detroit~s Olympia at 2:15 p.m - We believe everyone should visit the convention and welcome the representatives of the NAACP in their 48th Session of ~The Fight for Freedom.~ Warn of Danger.
