Birch, II, 51, for mer Genesee County assistant prosecut-ng attorney, died in Ann Arbor, Michigan, ai the Veterans ~Hospital Wednesday morning. Mr. Birch had been il] evel a peridd of several months and - was on extended sick leave from tas ao the legal section of the Post Office in Washington which he accepted in the Spring of 1955. ~He served in the United States~ armed servicés from 1942 until 1946 when he was promoted to First Lieutenant. He was appointed | an assistant prosecutor in January, 1949, and held this position, for 4% years. He had several cancer opera tions on his larynx which left him wtihout a natural voiee, resulting in him speaking with the aid of an electric larynx and breathing with. a tube. in his throat. Mr. Birch gained many friends while he lived in Flint and conmunity, He was-active:in ~handitributed _ so much ~to ~His com ing domestic problems:while ~in|~: the~ prosecutor's: office and often ' appeared as speaker, on ~such i topics. = ~ be sis eg ~He was: a. member. ~of: Sanca Alpha Psi fraternity anda past grand officer of that ~organization and a member, of. In the last two years he: had presented several] nursing: scholarships and only last~ moth had announced his plans ~to give more; since he -had spent so much time. in hospifals., he explained, this represented his way of saying ~thanks~ for ~all the kindnesses~ given him. by nurses. He was born in Kansas City and came to Flint in-1935. He graduated from University of Southern California and received his degree from Howard University Law School, Washington, D.C.: Funeral services will: be held Saturday, May 11, at Metropolitan Baptist Church at 2 p.m. The body will lie in state at the church from 11 a.m. until time for services, The Rev. The American Legion sponsored this, their first affair in an ef fort to increase membership.
