Lizzie concludes the day ~The singers stayed after school this afternbon to see about singing for the elocution class.; They have got their pieces all selected and the. singers all appointed for each piece. Had a melodeon there and some singing. Holman (D., 4th) and voted Republican. Miss Williams: was born in Topeka, Kan., Oct. 12 1924. Her father, Ethridge T., is a Palmer House employee. -Her grandfather, J. J. Holman, Sr. was ~Topeka~s first Negro deputy sheriff. The young attorney attended Topeka High school, where she was graduated in 1941 with honors.; Her mother, Leona, provided her piano lessons and when Miss ~Williams was 5 she was traveling with Gwen Preston~s all-girl band: as its only Negro member She danced and sang. Gives Up Stage This led to study of ballet, and she developed ambitions to became a theatrical performer. But tuberculosis and an appendicitis attack caused her to abandon the stage. After her graduation from high school, Miss Williams became a stenographer for a Washington newspaper. She _ later worked in the war department and attended night classes at Howard. university. Her family moved to Chicago in 1944 and she became a stenographer in the army~s quartermaster depot here. She attended Covers ls sity, and entered Wilson Junior college, graduating in 1945. She also attended De Paul university, Kent law school. and Loyola university Yaw school, graduating in 1949. _ Becames Case Worker ~Timid about opening an office, she went to work as a _case ~worker for the county welfare department and soon was appointed a~ legal consultant. Speaking of Television, ~the powers that be~ in charge of the ~Emmy~ Awards ~overlooked~ a group of talented actors who contribute so much pleasure EVERY DAY to, housewives all over the country. I am referring to the ~soap opera~ stars who daily brighten up Mrs. America~s ~hum-drum~ routine day. Bride (Love of Life),, Mary Stuart, Larry Haines (Search for Tomorrow), William Dillard (Love for Life), Lyle Sudrow, Charita Bauer, James Lipton (The Guiding Light) overlooked? oe wigtilg PARTYFARE: I went: to a party Saturday night that wasn~t JUST a party... it was... well. it was fabulous! and that~s putting it mildly. The guests who jam-packed George and Vivian Artis~ glass enclosed harlequin-designed rumpus room could easily have filled the first two pages of ~Who~s Who in Flint.~ Socialites from as far away as Chicago and Detroit came to wish Vivian a ~Happy, Happy Birthday.~ The beautifully appointed buffet table set up against a brilliant harlequin backdrop was reminiscent of the lavish ~14th Century~ Royal banquets depicted on the screen in wat | technicolor, wide screen process, and all. In the center of the table was a whole bar-b-qued pig, replete with a red apple in its mouth. The bbirthday cake, measuring ~23 by 25~ inches, was a frosty white concoction trimmed with beautiful (and delicious) red roses. The ~real conversation piece~ was the ~frozen~ punch bowl (a ring of strawberry colored ice molded and frozen to form a punch bowl), which was filled with vanilla ice cream dotted throughout with whole ripe red strawberries. It was almost too pretty to eat... but somehow during the evening it disappeared. Bamboo-handled knives, forks and spoons... carafes.. \Italian pottery chafing dishes and straw-weaved bread baskets added the ~20th Century~ touch. And the gifts... everything from A to Z, and then you could begin again twice over!.~Who gaid~Christmas. was~in December? I~m sure this will ~bea birthday long? id by everyone there... En ee ae lee * * *: COCKTAIL CHIT-CHAT: Everyone~s talking about... that popular young teacher who changes new cars like they were old shoes.-.. that well known ~sorority sister~ who showed up at a very, very swang affair wearing a silverblu full length mink coat and soiled blue jeans... that ~reporter~ from one of the ~scandal~ magazines who seems especially interested in SEVERAL local citizens... that surprise baby shower that was really a surprise... mian stork chose that day to make his delivery... so the Alfred Walkers welcomed a beautiful son; Eric Jon: Gloria Peters, Barbara and Pauline Rushing and John Nash returned from Cleveland where they represented Michigan at the Bahai~s Youth Conference.... A big orchid should go to Mrs. Etta Artis... the wonderful ~surprise~ party given for 83 years young Mrs. Anna Wright was HER brainchild. 1957 United Negro College Fund Begins.A series of radio and TV programs for the United Negro College Fund~s 14th annual appeal will be opened by Lee Hastings Bristol, national campaign chairman, on Sunday, March 31, over the ABC Radio Network~UNCF regular choir program. The March 381 program will feature the choir of Huston-Tillotson ColPivin~ of Austin, Tex., under the direction of Aaron M. ash. The goal sought for the 1957 appeal fs $2,000,000. Volunteer committees will solicit funds in more than 100 cifies across the country. As na_ tional campaign chairman, Mr. Bristol, president of Bristol-Myers Co., will direct all fund-r aising activities, First of the choirs to be heard the choirs Wiley College, Marshall, Tex. (March 17); and Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, N. C. (March 24). And on March 31, the Huston-Tillotson program with Lee Hastings Bristol. These programs are presented as a public service by the ABC Radio Network in ~coeperation with the UNCF.
