Vosburg of Court Street Methodist Church. While the sermon was addressed to the high school graduates, its lessons are still timely. We pass on to you, with: permission of Dr. Vosburg, excerps from his sermon. ~Tne Bible wee: And though I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge; and though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, [ am_ nothing. ~ (I. Corinthians 13, 2.) Any one of us, through a life of righteousness, devo-- tion and prayer, can win. to the whole faith that rewards ~As we were drifting about midnight.., fearing that we might run:on the rocks they let out four anchors from the stern, and prayed for day to come~... Acts 27:27-29. Using the above quoted Scripture as the theme for his sermon, Dr. Vosburg began, ~At the very start they drifted and were afraid. Well might they be + for it is always dangerous to strength But we will not be wholly acceptable in the sight of God until we unfailingly extendea loving heart and helping hand to all our less fortunate brethren. The picture of a wrecked motor bus which ran off the side of an \Alpine road in Austria shows what happens when fauIty brakes permit~ an automobile to drift down hill with gravity. so: fast. the driver can no longer control its direction. ~The picture. of an arrested delinquent who\has sunk from petty crime to petty crime and finally to the major crime of murder, when life no longer is sacred, is the picture of a life that has, been permitted to drift down hill morally.~: Dr. Vosburg proceeded ~explain the merits of ~steering against the current of convenience.~ He cited two examples: Thé boats on the waterway traveling with the current cannot contro] their direction as readily as those going upstream, and the air pilot always. heads. into the wind at take-off to gain altitude. He recalled an~ old sailors~ chant, ~Who does not answer to the | udder shall, answer to the rock.~ The ge aiunting class was told, ~Steer or smash is the alternative that life extends us. Life. grows ill if it is not well handled.... While others have chosen to drift with the stream you have designed your course _and have held the, rudder steady... We are pleading with you to continue that initiative of answering to the udder. and avoiding the rocks. iashit Reverting back. to the Scripturg said, ~It wi ure, Dr. their vessel drifting that told Paul and his companions they were in danger. When once they made up their mind to do something about it they were safe.. -. They let out four anchors from the stern. Until one knows for certain which way he wants to steer, an anchor which holds him steady is the best ally.~ Dr. Vosburg discussed the four - anchors that might be used to day to insure a fruitful life. The first one is the anchor of experience: ~The lawyer holds his brief steady by basing it.on precedent;. the medical doctor resduces the risk of his prescription by basing it on the case studies of his colleagues who have pioneered ahead of him,~ he elaborated. The second anchor which has its steadying influence is the anchor of. expectation. ~... Tragic- experiences overtake people when they let go of a sense of expectancy. Esau sold his birthright for a mess of pottage when he took a short sighted view of life. Even Jesus could do no mighty works in Nazareth because the people had no faith.~: ~Unto whomsoever much has been given, of him much cope required,~ quoted Dr. Vos a knot in it and hang on! te at told of how much it a young soldier under be told by General Washington that he was counting on him. He told of the steadying affect that Uncle Pio~s expectancy had on a talented singer in ~Thornton Wilder~s story of the Bridge of San Luis Rey.~ He told -how the old man took the Singer from a cheap dance hall and trained her voice and taught her the higher class music that her talent deserved. She worked diligently, but as the story goes it was so much easier for her to sing cheap jingles that the crowd would applaud that every. now and then she. would do the easy thing instead of the best thing. She knew that Uncle Pio would disapprove. He knew and she knew that shé ought to be getting better. 3 The anchor of Eternity is a third anchor. ~A chaplain from World War II boaster that ~there are no atheists in fox holes~ and another soldier from an earlier Was described a_ particularly hard fought battle and added, ZT bapa everyone prayed that night.~ It was quite proper to resort to prayer in much thé same manner that we would use the life. preserver or the red fire axe and bucket behind the - glass panel-reserved for extreme emergency use only.~ Dr. Vos designated Preparation as fourth anchor. ~I firmly believe that God has a place and purpose for each one of us. But ~We prepare ourselves we can never achieve that purpose... When we consider that the Great Teacher spent 30 years preparing for three| brief years of service we ean understand why his prayers were answered,... Whe reach the end of your tie the Be gen 8 = Ee an at one an e grip r at the other, we can afford to wait for the day. What ~anchors are to a ship at rest, the rudder is a ship in motion. Purpose is the gui hand that answers to the rudder so that we will not be forced to answer to the rocks. - - Rey. C. R. Neal To Be Guest.. Minister The Rey. C. R. Neal, pastor of Shiloh Baptist church, will be the guest minister at the First ~ Trinity Missionary Baptist church, located at 2014 Dwight Ave., Sunday, July 8.
