Lawrence, pastor ef Vernon Chapel A.M.E., ani his members were ~undoubtedly very pleased with the Jarge turnout te the concert given by the Wilberforce University Choir, Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Buick! Local 599 Hall. The concert was, part cf Vernon 35th Anniversary celebr ation. s Atty, John F. Young, assistant cipal judgeship in 1957, was the toastmaster. The 26-member choir, terson, a product of Heward University School of Music, made a big hit with its audience.:After, assurances from Mr. Patterson that applause would be appreciated by the choir at anytime, the response after each selection left no doubt as to the pleasure received from listening to the varicus elections, The program included such favorites as ~Crucifixus, Ave Marie, Upon the Day of Judgement, Mister Banjo, Poor Wayfaring Stranger, Russian Picnic, Aint That Good News, } My Lord What a - During the intermission, Dr. ~harley L. Tab. - The Metropolitan Baptist _Tabernacle which stands at 3939 Industrial Ave., burned its mortage Sunday, Feb. 19, 1956. Rev. Charles H. Nicks with his three choirs from Peoples Baptist Church in Detroit was gage burning~service. It was a glorious day for the membership of Metropolitan. For many, it represented a true climax in the struggle to build an edifice that would be adequate for the fast growing membership. The church stands as a testimony as to what people can-do when working together with the_proper leadership. It is ~significant because of the trenendous responsibility under taken at that time (1949). $85,000 was a very steep figure. It is desired that the record and ability of the late Rev. T. L. Ballou and Rev. Edgar J. Timmons in reaching this important milestene in the history of Metropolitan Rev. Timmons is hospitalized now - his presence in the church and community is missed.. Metropolitan has recognized its duty, not only to its membership, but to the community at large. As I approached the church, the~ many many ~fine looking automobiles indicated that the attendance for the mortgage burning ceremony would be large. Well, Sir, I had to go up to North Street to find parking space. A person could not get any far-. ther than the steps that lead into the auditorium. People - people ~ people - they were standing, shifting their weight from one foot to another, trying to look over a per+ son~s shoulder or his head to se@ Rev. Nicks. I wanted a picture, so down to the dining room I went to see if entrance couldn~t be gain another way. From the appearance of the dining room, one sould deduct that a large number xf people had been served dinner there. Mrs. McGruder was still there, working deligently in the kitchen.
