Texan Gets Stiff Sentence For Attacking ~ Negro Girl Gilmer, Texas - Luther A. Wheeler, 35, this week. received a 29 year imprisonment sentence. He was convicted of raping a 14-year~ old Negro girl. _ The young girl was reportedly attacked on the afternoon of Sepiember 26, 1955, in a wooded area "just off Highway 271, about.a mile north of Gladewater. She testified that she accompanied the white man after her mother had given her permission to do house work for~him. The mother took down the license number of the car the man was driving. Wheeler was? arrested by Longview officers ~ ~the same eyening after they traced the ownership. The owner said that Wheeler had been driving y that afternoon. County Atty. ' Ott Duncan, pro Florida Students Want Integration Deland, Fla., - Stetson University executive council of the Baptist Student Union have begun a drive to bring about integration at the university by 1957. Although final action will not be taken until November 25, when the student government association will pass in it, the students passed a resolution at a meeting of the union. Mass. Attorney General Brands Klan Revival Everett, Mass. - Massachusetts Attorney General George Fingold branded as a ~district threat t> our national freedoms,~ the present revival:of the KuKlus Klan in. Georgia. ~News dispatches from Atlanta just two weeks ago today. advised which we hoped was dead and buried, has received a new charted,~ us that this terrorist organization, Fingold said, ~for the avowed purpose of protesting desegregation in the public schools.~ ~Unless such activities are checked, the country is faced with a wave of law lessness, economic boycotts and even murder, tha may besmich our national history and shock the civilized world. ~Let there be no mistaking,~ Fingold warned, ~Our freedom is at stake in peacetime, too, every bit as much as in wars, maybe more so.~ Negro Housing,, Dilemma To Be Examined A conference on housing is beo ~diagnosed and recommend work ing planned by the Urban League able solutions to local housing problems.~ The event will be held at ber 21. NAACP Pours Reserve Fund Into Negro Bank New York - According to an NA ACP spokesman, the National Office has transferred $10,000 of its reserve funds from a New York bank to the Negro-owned Victory Savings Bank of Columbia, 5.C. to aid victims of economical pressure. Townsend, the following annoucement was received by The Bronze Reporter: STATE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION announces that civil service examination will be given. to applicants for state police jobs. | The test will be given December 17, 1955, -however,. applications will have to be filed no later than November 30, 1955. Positions ~are. offered ubarried or. single men whose ages range from 21 to 29. Salary begin at $153. 20 every two! weeks. | In a statement, Mr. Clearence Reeves,.
