R.- Turpin, a Minister Mrs. Ruth Buckner Addresses Blue Star Mothers The Harriet Tubman Chapter of the Blue Star Mothers sponsored its Artnual Banquet - at Metropolitan Baptist Church, October 1, at 6:30 p. m. More than 150 gue:Ws heard Mrs. Ruth Buckner of the Family Service Agency speak on the subject: ~The Three C~s - Concientious Contributors to Their Country~, ~ The affair was given to raise funds to assist hospitalized veterans, which is one of the main objectives~ of the Blue -Star Mothers.: The guests enjoyed an outstanding -program. Mrs.. Wheeler McGee was chairman. In addition to the interesting and inspiring talk given.by.Mas., Buckner, Mr. George | rilkinson rendered several solos. He was ac companied by ~Mrs. Desiree John-. son. Mrs. Lyda Griand~,rry and Mrs. Flavela Jennings sresented dramatic readings, and: Mrs;:Coleman, accompanied by Mrs. Pau}line Scott, rendered a solo. The Reverend T. Booker gave Graee and Mrs. Jessie L. Brady, president, presented =distinauish-: ed guests. Everyone had an enjoyable evening. te oe, | i { H | i > | 1~ When I was a boy my father heard our lessons while my |mother washed the dishes and scrubbed the floors. Every father. on the*block did the same thing. They were not educated men, but they were fathers,first, last and all the time.: We had our gangs. There was the baseball gang, and the football) gang, the skating ~gang and the swimming gang. There was plenty of rivalry between the members and not a few fights. But} they: were clean and fair fights and they were often over the rivalry of achievement - daytime achievement most of it. These are not pictures from the remote past of the ~good old days.~ They are of decent American |youth, virile, ambitious, lawabiding. This kind of living will not |be brought back by curfews, by books and articles on cause of juvenile delinquency. Only your family~s determination to be the kind of family God meant it to be will bring back these days of happiness.: The first thing needed is a true home. The true home is a replic home that is without quarreling or Nagging; neat, orderly, and as True Homes| of Nazereth in. which the holiest} family of all lived. This means a}: _ATTEND CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY teres ites nown Pilgrim Travelers have denied ~jazzing up~ their newest gospel recording entitled: ~Troubled In Mindy~ the record was released by Specialty label, it has become a subject of controversy among lovers of religious recordings. _ Most Southern California disk jockeys-who feature gospel music have played both sides and spoke in praiseworthy terms of the platter. A scratted few in turn have refrained. from using the record because they claimed their listeners would not approve. One station said it planned too play the record and let their listeners be the judge. For the most part, public reaction to the recording has been excellent, according to Lillian Cumber manager of Herald Attractions, who handles the Travelers bookings. Specialty president, Art Rupe, reports favorable reactions and excellent sales throughout the country. J._W. Alexander,, manager of the Pilgrim Travelers, one of the Ameri~a~s foremost Gospel sing attractive as the combined efforts of the whole family-can make it. The ideal home is one that echdes with prayer and love of God and one another. ~The family that prays together, stays together~ ~ and plans and works and| loves together too. It is a not: worrying about keeping up ing what it has from God~s hands. A} true family is one that lives together ~ not just at meal-time and bed-time, whenever that may be. It is a family that is at home -ing fun and entertaining themselves together. The best indication that a home member goes his own way for entertdinment. Actually, mother should: entertain her children~s friends at home. Hospitality like this |doesn~t call for luxury or great expense, but simply a little love|and interest. My dear parents, they are your children. You have _ put many hours of labor and anxiety into their upbringing. You love them and they are your responsibility. They are potentially your greatest: happiness and reward in this life. They are God~s gift to you; 'don~t treat: this gift cheaply. Mt. Olive Missionary Union Honors Mrs. Rosa L. Kimp ~ Olive Baptist Church had sched-;uled |Sunday, October 9, as the day for honoring Mrs. Rosa L. Kimp who was the efficient president of this group for more than 12 years. Because Mrs. Kimp was committed to her special assignment! with Mrs. Nannie H. Burrough, in Washington, D. C.,the jgroup ~surprised Mrs. Kimp by bringing the recognition ceremony to her home hours before she departed for the nation~s capital.. Mrs. Kimp. -was presented with ja gift. Datipaneninn Fall. Program Mr; James Johnson, Director announced that the Fall program is now opened to the young people. Certainly we would be the last group in the world to d6 anything to, offend or desecrate the dignity of gospel and spiritual music. Instead, we feel that we have captured the genuine beat and cadence of gospel music on these two sdes.~ God made both tears and laughter, and both for kind purposes for. as laughter enables mirth and surprise to breathe freely, so tears enable sorrew to vent itself patiently.
