Inspector~ Samson pe rmined test that we four new men should be) put on at once, and since week efvd nights are times of the great est activity! we were raga a to tive 11:00 P. M. shift. My first h@urs of duty were met with of~jeer M. Jarret to district 6, This wufignmeent was forutnate for me because/I had the advantage of officer Jarrett~s extensive exqevrience. Qifficer Jarret was exte#mely generous in. sharing this egperience (by giving me) many vaiuable tips and helping -me vAsenever and whereaver he could. My firsi week on the forte was vmventful with only reuntine exyriences, Our patrolling was intetrupted jxy a week of schooling. Inspector Samson prepared the schedule awd directed activities of | the s@hool with an experienced guiding hand. City Manager, Harold C. Chirgwin, gave the opening addréss. He mentioned that. the school, in its comprehensive scope wes the first of. its kind in a vary long time in Flint. (There were fourteen new partolmen and itwio:partolwomen jin attendance. Chief of Police George B. Paul | CALVIN BLACK ly reiterated and repeated, of which were public relations and two common sense. We were also shown [FBI films on various police} problems, 4 One problem brought to our attention. was that of juvenile delinquency. Although the police are doing everything possible to combat the preblem, juvenile delinquency is steadily increasing in Flint as well as throughout the nation as a whole. To effectively combat this growing problem, the followed with a welcoming ad- L.whole hearted cooperation of the dress, advice and admonitions. We hed a variety of well qualified and tinteresting instructors. Each af us was required to take notes to ~be turned in for examination. An_- extensive recreation and educational program is needed to guide the overexuberance of some youngsters into. creative and channels. - Every reader of the Bronze Reporter is especially urged to help combat this problem. During the course of school each of us was instructed in the use of firearms and allowed to fire at the target range. One particular class dear to the heart of all of us was our. various speech classes. ~This class was devised by Inspector Samson. in order to strengthen the ability of each one of uS to compose speeches and deliver them with~ assur ance. At the end of the course examinations were taken. The school allowed each of,..us new officers to become very well acgquainted with one another. Inspector.5amson proposed that we hold an annual reunion. to exchange experiences ~and ideas. This proposal. was heartily accepted. The end-.of the school period -was looked upon with some. gsadness by all of us because Inspector Samson was so kind and patient with us. Our City Manager also attended the closing phase of the ~school by expressing his confidence in each of us. A panel discussion to answer any questions we may have was held as the last feature of the program. Each of us was then given his néw assignment. During the last fiscal year, over 5,000,000 volunteer hours were spent in Red Cross collection, of blood for defense and _ civilian use. We may have the jack to lift you to your feet. The menu consisted of chicken -salad, hard rolls, nut bread and a gay relish dish with a wariety and other goodies. After ~the social meeting, everyone played a,game of Canasta. Prizés were given~ out to the winners. First prize went to Mrs. Mashaw which consisted of a pair of beautiful salt sand pepper shakers. Second prize was cop. ped by Mrs. Frank Dillsworth of 766 Parkland St. She received a beautiful creamer. The next club meeting will ~be held at the home of Mrs. Angelo Cannon of 1056 Baltimore Street. It~s a fact that one among every 12 persons, ~between the ages of 20: and 60, has contributed blood through Red Cross_ for the inauguration. of the Red Cross Blood Program in January: 1948.
