Ms rshall Boor, Editor The Flint Weekly Review 412 Buckham. Flint 3, Michigan. Dear Sir: | ~ 1 ti Will you permit an interested ~observer to comment on the unsigned editorial which appeared in the July 2, 1954 issue under|/ the columa ~Out of the Tower~, and the subject of which was ~Uncle Tom Is Dead~?: My interest springs primarily ~from the fact that the views ex~pressed constitute a~ scurrilous at-j tack upon ~the integrity and loy~alty to the Negro, of one of my best. friends, Dr. Jesse Leach; the statements~ made are completely unfair and utterly ~without foun-|.| ~dation: in fact. Because they refer to a professional man, such statements. whether true or not ~ntight be believed by many and thus could) possibly do,irreparabie sharm to ~Dr. ~Leach~s business. Being - ~very familiar with your ~personal (editorial | accomplishmients, and understanding your spolicy~ of /fair play, I feel certtain that you will permit my.comjments to! appear in your fine pub~cation. Justice, I am sure you ~will agree, dictates no other equi~table course. } Pia editorial, I note, is unsignamatéurishly written, and saloon br and rhetorically in4accurate, go I know it was written y someone other than yourself. Editorial anonymity, -especially, is, Fnot your forte. 4 ~Now my comments: ~ The title ~(Uncle Tom Is Dead~, ~which appeared in an issue. of ~EBONY ~ on poses several years ~ago, and the remarks in the first ~three paragraphs of the letter are ~trite, meaningless, much: over sworked, ahd not worthy of further mention. a ~Paragraph four states ~Let~s. discuss a man who has been riost uncd- -operative toward the progress of the human race.~ Ridiculous!: How can. a man who has practiced medicine for ace?~~ Dr. Leakh has ical contribu xine right | ere in Flint. He servlied as the ifinst Negro member of the Genesee County Board of | quested service, which was refused ~Flint, -and he is considered, mony Supervisors; as a matter of fact, he and Dr. Moore will be remem liered by. all fair-minded Flint residents as having done more to| improve the lot of Negroes here, before the advent of such agencies as the NAACP and the Urban) League, and even the FEP Committee of the CIO, than ~ANY! other people I know. In this same paragraph, ~the writer (?) refers to Dr. J.) L. Leach as the ~so-called Presédent~~ for the Flint Branch of the NAA CP. - There is no such title in any echelon of the NAACP, as ~socalled President.~ A person is ELECTED to the office and is the President, and IS so pecogntey ed by the parent national body. - ~Paragraph 5 does not deservé any comment. ~ In paragraph 6, "the writer states that he would like to ask Dr. Leach to name one thing he has done for the promotion o civil rights in the city of Flint}, What may I ask is gh diagrie him: or her (the writer). from do ing just that? There is no padlock on the door of Dr. Leach~s office,. and his telephone bill is paid up to date, cir was, when i talked to him necently. Sine the writer is apparently afraid ta do this, allow me to state what 1 KNOW personally, about some of the things Dr. Jesse L. Leach has done to promote civil rights in Flint. In 1938, I beliehes| a Negro was denied service at a. prominent restaurant in downtown Flint. When Dr. Leach was told about it, he went to the establishment and re for the usual reason. He person: ally\ brought suit, obtained a con viction, and the practice was dis+ continued in that particular res+ taurent,\and naturally led to sim+ ilar results in others, This was one.of the FIRST tests of the Diggs Civil\ Rights Law in the entire state, and I am most positive that it the first andl test in the City of Flint. Dr. Leach was influential in obi taining the appointment of the first Negro Deputy \. Sheriff in than any other one person, respon sible for the appointment of a Negro to the Flint Police Depart: ment. He must share in large~ measure the credit for the e ted impending appointment of (Continued on page 6) on \ | H TO THE EDITOR ~+.--..$3.00 July. 2; ~ To the Editor of the BRONZE REPORTER ' I eertainly did enjoy my * in Flint. I have a\ real -problem and I don~t know I have talked it They are sdrry for mz, but as yet have not olifered any answers.. ~My husband, Willie, and me have been married for a little over two years. We havea 9| mo. old baby girl. During the first six months of our marriage, we had fun. We were real happy. Then I~found out that I was go ing to have our baby. At first, | Willie. seemed real happy. My pregnancy turned out to be a difficult one. I was often sick and had to go to bed. For a while aftér our baby came, Willie was -eal good to me. Then he started ganibling, and staying out ~til all hours of the night. He doesn~t even work regular anymore. =I don't know what to do. No mat~| ter what, I have a baby and I need my husband. What can I do?. Sincerely, Mrs. L.AwJ. x om ite Dear ~ties. LAS. | I can readily sympathize with you.| You say that you and Willie were happy for the first six months of your marriage. During vour pregnancy and after, your husband began to pay less _and less attention to you. You do not mention other women in your list of grievances. Perhaps you have| made the mistake of becominb more and more of a mother and less and less of a wife. Your husband may have as a result bscome quite jealous. It happens all too often. By all means, do try to isave your! marriage. May I suggest the Ao hung techniques: 1.'Make yourself as attractive as ppssible. 2. Cook his favorite meals. '3.!Plan your day so that) you will have time to spend with him in the evenings, 4..Let him know still pretty important to you. 5. Show him that you have not: forgbtten how to be a good wife. Jolin: Hightower ~Every since I wrote an. article in the Flint Weekly Review newspaper Friday, July 2, 1954, (Title ~Uncle Tom: is Dead~) any people have called my home and ~Local 569 UAW-CIO hall offering their appreciation and giving me useful information abowt Dr. L.. J. Leach. =: With all due sincerity, I want to thank the: general public for their support, but let me make] myself clear. I am not in any: personal fight with Dr.. Leach. ~ Itcould have been you if you held) the highest position in the organization, set-up as a symbol to. express. its. desires. and. determina-|: tion to bring to bear its full weight to help win first class and- child in. America. Dr. L, J. Leach says, ~We are: not interested in skating, we are interested in getting jobs: for. the Negroes downtown, working in the department stores and the banks. | Let me tell you this, Dr., whenever there is segregation in any form, be.it at the Rolling Rink, Bowling Allies, Restaurants and. the like, the National Association-for the Advancement of Colored People ~branches have always taken a fighting position in every city but this one. Today, our law enforcement}. department, from J. Edgar Hoover, the head of the FBI on down, is offering advice on how~ to eliminate juvenile delinquency and how can you be a teader of the Negro race when you sit down and let skating go on for Monday nights for our Negro juveniles at} the Flint Park? Sunday, June 27, 1954, you openly attacked the ones who took part in. stopping racial. discrimination at our Flint Park. Again, I ask you to come out supporting civil rights or _ step) down from the office you now hold, as President of the NAACP! Our FEP. committee. is formed to build a new type of organization for all the peope and not for our individuals~ welfare ~ and the exploitation of the minority races. A most significant event took place in our own city, Wednesday, June 30, 1954, over 32 Negro children gathered and skated together at the Flint Roller Rink. Remember, Doctor, this is the same program you would not take a good position on. You see this FEP Comittee of Local 599 will always take the position our International Union directs us to take. - Doctor! Eloquence is a mighty ~weapon in the struggle for all the people. Just demands, but what is more eloquent than the struggle itself? The ones who are against our civil right movements will move far more ~rapidly when they sce millions white and colored in the struggle than when they hear and see you acting as a clown, The organization you are now the President of, is above all the]. organizations of struggle. It stands for the unity and the understanding of all the people; is irrespective of union affiliation, organized and unorganized; for | Out of The Tower... - the unity of people: to: work te gether and for the alliance the American people fighting for equal rights. - By fighting the committee or me, Dr. Leach,:will only make us move on, united as the members of the great Local 599 have emAbie us~ to do, and neither you, Leach, nor beast. will turn us back: We will achieve our fight, without you, for full equality and security. Don~t fight us ~ But join us! Dr. 5. kL. Beech Answers Critics July 9th, 1954 ~Mr. John W. Caldwell, Editor The Bronze Reporter v lint, Michigan citizenship for every man, woman |. My Dear Mr. Caldwell: Thanks for your interest in the matter of the anonymous writer ~who made an attack upon me in ~the Flint Weekly Review during ~my absence from the city, Many of my friends have call~ed me about the article and many others.have passed it up as the act of a~Crank not worthy of recognition and. still others have answered the attack. For me, I cannot dignify the writer~ by wasting time trying to ~fetter him or her out for I am convinced of one of two things. First I must be doing alright or I would not be attacked. Second, the writer is either a naive or a fool or both and-purely ignorant. of the NAACP and the: progress Flint has made during the last 80 years. to foe feta I have long since teakenesd~ ~To wrestle with a Skunk, even though you win the contest, the odor of the Skunk ~will be. left upon you~~, and again, while I do not know~the. identity of the. ~writer, I. have strong suspicions, that ~it wag the hand of Esau, but, the voice of Jacob.~ So long as the ~ Flint Branch merits the ~whole-hearted support. of such men and women like the Rev, T. T. Newman and the Canaan Baptist Church, who gave us more than 250 paying members and. other Pastors like Rev. Pryor, who gave a hundred dollars to our Youth, Rev. Franklin Jones, Neal, Watkins, Montgomery,. Turpin, Davis, Teague, Tim-_ mons, Courts and many other Pastors and their congregations, and the fine White and Colored Citizens giving us their support~ I will not be disturbed by the howl of the wolves because they are lonesome for something to lead.; My record in Flint for 34 years long before the. Urban League, the NAACP, the UAW-CIO or FEPC, will sustain me from such attacks as these, May God help the poor) soul and give him comfort.
