There was an air of tensness, as a man~s life hung in the balance. One grim reminder of Hensley~s future was present in the form of a six footer from Arkasas. This reminder was typical of what the whites refer to as trash or cracker, and what we refer to as red neck. Big, ignorant-looking, and contemptous of the fact that 8o much time was being consumed o on the part of one Tittle man of color, Esau Hensley.: ~| Hensley must be ~allowed to stay in Michigan! The case against his is a civil case, and does not warrant criminal proceedings. Hensley must be saved and Arkansas denied the privilege of making an example. An example that would serve to frighten the residents of this section. of the state into staying in their so-called place. If this man is returned, it will serve notice that the long arm of south~ern injustice can reach anywhere in the country, and victimize any Negro that may incur the wrath of her author ities. -.|. If it was a case where Hensley had committeed a crime, then there is no doubt that he should be returned to face ~charges. The only ~crime~ this man committed was beg unemployed in Arkansas and moving to Flint where~ he is working for General Motors. He did not remove fhe sewing machine from the jurisdiction of Arkansas. ~He has begged them to accept payment for the machine. The state refused settlement, they want a pound of flesh. { overnor, the case rests with you, may God guide you your decision. Edmuids, {) took plice on- their ~vtréets and HELP NEGROES ~A new police chief will be appointed in our city im the near future. This will very likely be heartening news to the many individuals who have engaged in the struggles to secure for Negroes equal opportunities ~for ad-- large numbers of Negrocs of gambling, vice, unlawful drinking and prostitution but no longer reported these to the police because THEY WERE AFRAID vancement~ in and sérvice with|~ afraid that the violators would the police force. <Many Negro| do them bodily harm. Upon read ing these responses, I could only conclude that these people did not have confidence in ovr law enforcement agency. Le The unfair utilization of our Negro police officers and _ the Negrocs~ general unfavorable attitude toward our police force should present a real challenge to the new chief. Let us hope that he tackles these problems with courage and fairness. families will mo doubt prayerfully hope that the~ new appointment will mean better police protection and law enforcemert in ~Negro Neighborhoods~. I NEED.NOT TELL YOU that Negro policemen have.not been given fair chances for promotions or for working in | certain divisions of our police department.
