And because there is no Frankly Speaking By ARTHUR J. EDMUNDS Executive Secretary Urban League of Flint Since this paper~s: timely beginning, a different ~~Frankly Speaking~ column has appeared in each issue. In each article I on some topic bearing on problems of race relations locally and As I prepared to write my column for~ this week~s issue of the BRONZE REPORTER, it occurred to me that in nota single instance. have any comments on or criticisms of my views. No one has expressed any agreements or |disagreements with what I have said. In view of this, I take for granted that the E opinions I have expressed are infallible, or perhaps invulnerabie to criticism. So I~ll just continue. SHAMEFUL RENT GOUGING Last week several shameful practices were brought to my attention that figuratively made my blood boil. The practices involved the most vicious |examples of rent gouging I have ever seen in Flint ~ or anywhere else. NO CLOSETS, NO HEAT VIRTUALLY ~No Nothing~~ During an substandard dwellings. I visited one delapidated and unsafé threeflat apartment building in~ which four families were living. In one instance two families. or seven individuals occupied one three-room apartment, Each family paid $15 per week for rent. Each of the families occupying the other two apartments (one in the basement and the other on the second floor) paid $30 per week for rent. Just imagine ~ $30 per week or about $140 per month for an unheated three-room apartment with neither closets nor a bath tub. The stairway leading to the second floor was so rickety that I was actually aaacy of | visiting that floor. OWNER OF BUILDING NEGRO I was startled- when I learned that these apartments rented for $30 per week. Why I understand that the five-room apartments in the luxurious Park View Manor. located on Court Street at Crapo. rent for no more than $125 per month. My shock turned to anger when I learned that the building was owned by a Negro. This provided a good example of what the ~man~? meant when he said ~your own kind is often your worse enemy.~~ CHILDREN ARE CHIEF SUFFERERS Now please do | not misunderstand me. I realize) that no singie group has a monopoly on such But I think it~s awful -that the ~worse case~ in-the city should be perpetrated by|a member of the group who endures the greatest sufferings and| hardships because of Flint~s critical housing problem. There~s no reason for it. This man. takes in nearly $300 per month from the rent of this building and he |puts nothing back into it for improvement and heat, six young tots who live in the building are very sick, with chest colds. What| do you do in cases like this? Will someone tell me? | Chicago, ~although #t is an inland eity, handles more water-borne weffic than the Panama Canal. Elm Purk COLLISION SERVICE 1940 HOWARD ST.
