' Phone 2- 6125 e~ 26 Years Of Dependable Service Frankly Speaking ~By Arthur J. Edmunds Exectutive Secretary Urban League of Flint It cannot that Negroes néed to be re binieel trained to accept new opportunities in -employment, honsing, training and public services. This statement may appear 1a be a little awkward to some readers of this column because it might suggest that I am advocating the earning. of something. that~ is guaranteed as a right. Yet as we think about it, this ists mostly in theory. In actual practice a lot is still left to be desired.: We so often demand the right to work in certain jobs, live in decent housing, the right to certain training opportunities, and the right to render public services. in integrated set-ups at all levels. And we have every right to make these demands. At the same time, however, we must have people. ~~qualified~ to move into these situations. who can belie, threugh their actions, the many stereotypes that hinder our path to full equaity. Let me cite just two examples. to show what I mean.: The Urban League had been trying for some time to secure equal work opportunities for our Negro youth'in one particular local firm, We wanted nice jobs and not just the usual ~after pin setting jobs that lasted far into the night. Well, we finally managed to secure one of these better jobs for one Negro youth. And _ before sending him to make formal application, he was specifically instructed on the responsibilities of his job. Also, we made every effort to help him to understand his very important responsibility to other Negroes who would like to work in similar jobs in the future. In addition to these instructions, the manager of the store also talked to: him about his job responsibilities and also what this opportunity meant to him, the many Negroes he ~~represent|ed~,. and the business. I recall that he specifieally told the boy this: ~If you cannot report to work on time, please let me know!~ To~maké a long story short, the boy.worked satisfactorily on his first weekend (he was hired only for Fridays and Saturdays) and was on the verge of getting a promotion. Most important of all, the manager was so pleased that. he was_ getting But these plans never did materialize because this ~pioneer~ DID NOT réport for work ~on the following weekend nor did he call to inform the manager~ ~ ~~A small matter,~ you may say but when you examine it closely. it is huge. You see this boy. ~represented~ all of us and he failed. miserably. | Yet his action gave support: to.) attitudes commonly expressed about us. One of them is ~~Negroes} are not. responsible.~ I cannot help but wonder if this high school boy, well known in sports, ever thinks of what it means if aj player on his team e SOFT DRINKS Long's Market & Variely Store @ COMPLETE LINE OF GROCERIES & MEATS. @ SOUTH SIDES MOST COMPLETE STOCKING BAR: e@ SCHOOL SUPPLIES 608 PINGREE ~ TELEPHONE 3-2806 ~right~ ex- | ready to hire another Negro boy. | be over-emphasized | | ~| mined;efforts to get CROSSWORD if P ~ ~a b8 eee Comet; rt PUZZLE i2,; Kk} ay) elles % a8 * HORIZQNTAL 5 * > ie g 19 8 1 To wander gee: - fa tell secret = oung.:. 12 City fn We a i 13 To om A | ~oO. ae 14 Pronoun 7 15 French P conjunc | 16 Fumble 32 ~18 Beetle 20 Type: unit i. 22 Ceremony. one 24 Great waves 4 27 Indigo plant 2 pee ~ a ~~ a: ow ~~~ on 32 Trial at Yi we 34 Luxgriant ~usiic | i ai note com ~46 ae; 37 = eriled 1 f:: 39 Fabulous ~~ a; 41 in. ame iP ae i sai pone place (abbr.): (Wy, Uy ta can 35 36 Ys yom usto Boe: 45 ~~ a ot YY: yy pes 47 Crue Uj Y) arties 50 Sly look ot j62 63 j64 66 52 Group of |: wie verses.; a i 1 a 54 Lieutenant 6/ ail Ee =, f bir.) | }; q, i ~5 To knock ie Le cae: q oe _ 57 To appear ~ 59 Exists PUZZLE NO. 278 6] Japanese |: sas 21 Title 62 To exist 66 French 63 Cowed 23 Girl~s name 64 Pronoun article a ae aa 25 Usurpation Answer to Puzzle No. 277 67 Pigment; 26 ~~" of Gute Lat Wireless AINTAL [GLO] | P] YIU) OLN urve. antenna PMPET NT HP ALU PR] Of A} RIEL O pe Bees Al TREE T|E]O} 1] Of Ul SMG] Y VERTICAL 30 Unbleached Tlo tletsis s UINT 1 Deer: eriod o 2 Professed time. If|he did stop to think ~about it he surely would have understood how, his failure to carry, out his ACCEPTED responsibility upset the work of a | team of people who are fighting to break down discrimination in employment and other aspects of our living. This boys comes fxbm a highly respected family and) he has always given the impression of being intelligent and of excellent character. -And in view of such excellent backgrotnd,|we are perplexed as to his reasons for fail ing us, particularly after he had]. been counselled for move than an hour and stated: that | he understood his simple vesponsibi lities. It is easy for jus tio say that such cases among whites go Unnoticed. And most of the times they do. But its a cinch that one such case See | is too often. interpreted to represent the conduct of ALL Negrvés. Fortunately, the manager involved recognized it as ian| individual case. He did not use| it to indict our entire. race. And I am very happy to report that|he plans to hire another Negro boy. Another case 1 would like to cite is the one of skilled jobs. in our auto plants, Everyone knows ycu must have certain training: to get these jobs. During the past six months many) training opportunities have opened | up~ in our local plants. The unions, particularly Local 599, have |made deterNegroes to apply for these jobs.) You would think we would jump at the opportunity but that is not the case. We like to talk about ~what we arc denied~ but too often we turn our backs on opportunities. and their attendant responsibilities. I know we do not |like to hear these things.. I certainly do not like to write about them. But, I sec it as a problem. |Things that the majority: group) get come ~naturally.~ Similar| things for Negroes~ come ~hard~ and too often have to be earned. I do not like having -to/|earn something thet 1 think is mine!. by ~ birthright. But, if it is la matter of earning it or being denied it altogether, I would do|my best: for me and my fellow brown-skinned brother.
