It is largely a national problem, affecting |the entire Ameriean economy. | The big décisions which will justify confidence of the people. ar@ decisions which must be made in Washington. Yet the people ~also look~and quite properly~to Lansing for state policies which |will maintain the prosperity. of our working people, our farmers, our business and professional men, and our great tourist industry, There is|)no reason~ why _ this great state and this immensely wealthy nation should suffer any kind of econdmic recession or depression. But public confidence must be founded on the assurance that government, both state and federal, stands ready to act, and act: promptly, to protect the health of our economy.~ Williams keynoted his message with these words:: ~IT believe the sivcner'vation of prosperity is the thing with which our people are most immediately concerned. 24 The governor, said the program he ~has laid before the legislature is aimed toward) the maintance of a healthy economic status in Miéhigan and correction of economic inequities in present state laws. ~Any existing threat to _ our standard of living can and must be met and defeated,~ Williams told the joint session of House and Senate members before packed fretleries | in the lower chamber.
