ww Ly THE BRONZE REPORTER Page Ture -: ~Rev, Robert H. Harper ~Doing the Works of God (Tem. | Perance). wer jor January 31: Jobn $: 223,: Golden ~Text: John 10: 10. ~The first two verses of the les-_ son text tell of the pool that stirred at times by a bubbling up of its | water. The people believed: the _bubbling was caused by an angei |}and that the first to get into the pool would be healed. Lying at: the. pool was-a poor afflicted fellow who had suffered /some dread malady for thirty-eight ~years and who had never been ~able to be the first to step into 'the pool after the bubbling of the ~water. When Jesus saw the man /and asked him if he desired to be healed, the poor fellow told of his ~failure to get into the pool. Then Jesus said to him, ~Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.~ And at once the man rejoiced to find that he could. obey. He took up his bed ~and walked. | The story indicates that the man ~had come into his sad condition ~because of his own sins. Perhaps ~am evil disease had laid hold of him \because.of his vices. While the book ~of Job teaches us that suffering is mot necessarily a result and an ~ewidence of guilt, we can but believe that many diseases are diTeetly the penalty of sin. ~Let us see that temperate, ~sane ving is a good insurance of health and happiness. There is much truth in the Japanese proverb, ~A noble ~soul dwells in a_ strong bedy.~~ ~Rightly provided for, the body will ~be the dwelling place of -all good things, the fit habitation of God himself. But abused and broken by sin, the poor old body will become the dwelling of despair. _ Bituminous coal eccounts for 80 per cent of all the energy produced from mineral fuelg and water.pow s er in all states east of the Missis ~ippi) river. | Dr. Carl B. Jones, Pastor | ~| taken to | Church With The Sermon Of The Week... ~Bp Rev. W. E. Teague Then He arése, and rebuked the winds an dthe sea; and there was a great calm. PY Matthews, 8-26. In this chapter we have Christ~s cleansing of a leper, His. curing a palsy and fever, His controlling the tempest. This miracle is also a parable, setting forth Christ as a giver of peace. and safety, both to individuais and to His Church. St. Augustine says, ~We are sailing in this life as through a sea, and the wind rises, and storms of temptation are ~- not wanting.~ Therefore Christ: doesn~t only calm the storm at sea, but He calms the storms of the soul. Christ for proof~s sake brought order out of confusion and calm out of storm, proving Himself the Lord of physical nature as well as of spiritual world He who is omnipotent came not to make the outward world calm, but came to show Himself supreme, and to introduce an inward peace into all our confusion. He saves not by taking us out of difficulty, but by making us ~in our weakness strangely strong; not by smoothing the circumstances, but by fortifying the soul, byjinfusing grace at the: moment, and pointing to an indestructable peace beyond. The Scripture says: And when He was entered into a ship, His disciples followed Him.- And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves; but he was asleep. And. his disciple came to him, and awoke Him, saying, Lord, save us, we perish. And He saith unto them, why are ~lye fearful, O ye of little faith! Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. In the hour of her} wildest uproar nature knew the voice of Him who was her -right~ful Lord, and gladly returned her legiance to Him. This set them wondering. The men marveled. They had been acquainted with the sea for a long time, but never saw a storm so immediately turned into perfect calm in all their lives. Taey saia what manner of man is this;:even the winds and the sea obey Him. We/|: know not the way of the wind, much less can we control it, but He that bringeth forth the wind | out of His treasury; and when it is out gathers it in his fists, He| that can do this can do anything. He can do enough to encourage our confidence, faith and comfort in Him in;the most stormy days without or within. The ship that is being tossed is a figure of the Church in_ the world, being tossed by the waves of ~persecution and temptation. But by the prayer of the Saints, Jesus is roused and restores peace to His own. Again my friends: The stormbeaten boat on the lake is a type of our lives. For everyone of us there are fimes when there arises a great tempest, the storm of sorrow sweeps over our home, our young men and women: are being the far-flung battle fields, some never. to return, leaving many homes broken. Then in that time of tempest, when the waves seem to go even over our souls, let us as Christians remem | ber that the ship in which we must cross the waves of this troublesome world is the ship-of Church: and that it carries Jesus, and where Jesus is there is a great calm. Let us fly to Him in prayer, who has never forgotten them, nor has He never failed, He can! make a peace, which. passeth all understanding. ~When the storms of life are raging, stand by me.
