We repeat this question be| Cause~ we have not seen one. | Since this question~ was asked, |many explanations shave been made as to why ~Negroes are | mot driving buses. One is, that. there are no openings at the present time. Perhaps this is true. The Bronze Reporter has the names of several applicants - who applied when there was a shortage of drivers, and these men are still available if the Transit system will use them. At press time, the * Bronze Reporter understands that an explanation will be made to the _ Negro of Flint over one of the _ local radio stations. We,- along with you, will be listening, but an explanation will not lull us to sleep. We want action based upon an indiscriminate hiring policy. We shall repeat this question ~over, and over, and over again, HAVE YOU SEEN A COLORED BUS DRIVER LATELY? OPEN LETTER TO: Mr, John Caldwell Editor in Chief ~ BRONZE REPORTER ' 202 East. 13th Street Flint, Michigan. Dear Mr. Caldwell: We have just read your editorial of December 26, 1953, dealing with the employment policies of the Flint Trolley Coach Company - in which you relate the obvious abgence of Negro workers as bus operators, I feel very keenly the fact that you or anyone on your staff did nog call Brother Crompton or my ~| Michigan~s lower peninsula. Letters To The! Editor... self before: writing your editorial | to continue to practice discrimin of December 26, 1953. However, I do not wish to debate that point with you as the facts in the case are more important than any individual or individuals and I would like here to state the facts. You ask: if certain people were only giving lip service. My record of working against discrimination in-any form is well known. I became actve iin the fight against discrimination in. 1937. My activity from that time until 1948 when I became City Commissioner is well known by'the people of th* | City of Flint. Since 1948 my ef'forts are a matter \of public record: It is unfortunate that you only recently came to the City of Flint and was not aware of my long ree ord in this fight when you wrote: the article, ~In the case of Flint Trolley Coach not hiring colored people;|. timate group that worked fer the I pointed out this fact to ~the cit-- izens of Flint. in the summer of 1948. and have pointed it out re peatedly since that time. I pointed it out again in late 1951 and early 1952 when I sponsored. and fought for a Fair Employment Law in the City of Flint. You state that I am the Direc tor of the CIO and therefore have some jurisdiction over the Trolley Coach Workers Union. ~This is a fact that you could easily have checked and I regret very\ much that you didn~t. I am the elected Director of the United Automiobile Workers Union, which is af-.filiated with the CIO and Region IC which takes in the center of The Trolley Coach workers are members of another union which has its own officers and its own director and has no connection with the UAF excepting the fact that we are both affiliated with the CIO. -: You also quesion my position as a Commissioner and allowing the city~s transportation system Who Will Be Elected ~Miss Bronze Reporter?~ The BRONZE REPORTER will give the following prizes to the winrier of the ~MISS BRONZE REPORTER contest: Ist Place 2nd Place srd Place. eee er eee ed in lice core ene ntied $100.00 War Bond $50.00 War. It should be noted that Flint Trolley cach is an independently-owned | firm operating on a franchise with the City of Flint. When the franchise renewal for a; ~ten+year period was placed on the ballot here in late 1947 or early 1948 I campaigned vigorously against this franchise both as an individual and as Pres. ident of Local 651. Later ~as a City Commissioner, I consistently voted against the present day-today franchise and against any fare raises. In fact I have voted against every issue which came in front of the commission~ that would in any. way benefit Flint Trolley Coach Company. One of my prime reasons for taking such a position was their. practice of discrimination. I have - joined with every legi advancement of the colored people and will continue to do so. In regards to Mr. Crompton: he has for years been a resident of the south end of Flint.and.a very active member of the UAW, an organization ~that has fought consistently | against discrimina-: tion and for equal opportunities for people of. all| races. -Mr. Crompton came on my staff in the summer of 1951. and along with other duties has been charged with the responsibility of working with any | group or any individual] in the never-ending fight for equal rights, I.want to welcome to Flint another newspaper: dedicated to fight against -discrimination and fight. for equal opportunities, both economic and social. I want to state further that we will help you in every way possible in this fight. We ask only | that when speaking about us, you first check the facts. so that it \will never again be necessary for us to defend ourselves against unfounded allegations, \ Very truly yours, | \(s) ROBERT A.
