Show Less Ducks - Lansing ~ The annual- midseason. aerial waterfowl census along the important east and southeast Michigan marshes shows total duck numbers down considerably from this time last year, but marks a sharp increase in coot numbers. Conservation game men. say 250,000 ducks, 27,000 ecoots, 100 geese, and six swans on waters | of Saginaw Bay, Saginaw valley, lower Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, and connecting waters. Last year, 453,000 duéks, 8300 coots, 78 geese, and three swans were counted in the'same waters. The wide margin of difference between ducks cotinted this fall and last fall, game workers. believe, was caused by mild weather extending deep into November. A large number of ducks apparently were still paddling. about on more northern waters, reluctant to leave until colder weataer took over. The aerial census this year ~was made Nov. 445; last year the count was /made Oct. 27-29. Bacxing the game workers~ belief that ducks are still farther north was an increase of about 25 percent in ducks counted this year in the Saginaw Bay region with the large decrease in population noted farther south on the Lake Erie marshes. Also a few more ducks and lots more coots were counted in Saginaw valley this year as compared with last year. On the more southern. St. Clair flats. about three-fifths as many ducks counted there last year were noted this year. The general waterfowl is closed after Nov. 24. season In the 13 years of the great migration, 1630-1642, nearly 20.000 Englishmen sailed for the New World to settle- m aad around Massachusetts Hey, colony.
