The break occurred late in November; during the next five days, the company responsible for the pipeline removed 60-70 percent of the oil from the! river, placed i4 skimming dams, and had 25 men working day and night to clear the river of the polluting oil. The oil slick extended | from Sherman field-near Mount Pleasant to Deerfield Center, a distance of about 12 miles. Law officers report finding no f* _fish killed by the pollution, Work -is expected to continue until all oil has been removed. A life insurance company re ports that nearly 75 per cent of policy-holders who died in 1952 were the victims of diseases of the heart, or blood: vessels, or of cancer.
