Government Under God.

The ~~divine right of Kings~ 4s
an ancient doctrine which*has lost
its significance in the most; of the
countries of the world. But it is
~still true that government in its
origin and authority is from God,
just as that was true in the days
-when government was. associated
with the rule of kings. The rulers
of Israel were spoken of as the
~~Lord~s anointed.~~

We find Paul urging obedience to
constituted government on \ thie.ground of the existing powers being
ordained of God. Even though the
~ Roman government was imperfect,
it preserved law and order throughout the Mediterranean world. And
the apostle sought to bring Chris-. tians~ to~ a fitting loyalty to the
established government.

Paul then lays down a principle
of abiding by the law. Love, he. writes, is the fulfilling of the law.
Love will work no ill to a neighbor |
~and it will commit no oéfense
against lawful authority. sf

In the fifth chapter of the Acts |
we read of. the ~second imprison:
ment of Peter ~and John.. When
brought before the;Jewish authori+
ties and reminded that they had
been forbidden to teach im the
name of Jesus, they replied thatthey ~~must obey God rather than
men.~~ The right of a Christian to
follow his conscience hag. been
allowed to the ~~conscientious ob~jectors~ to servite in war, In
America the doctrine of the sep-. aration of Church and State pro-. hibits the: interference of.the State
matters: of religion. It is safe? = to assume that all true members. ofthe Church will be loyal citizens:
~ the State.
