REGIMENTS IN 1888. ~When.-the Spanish-Américan: War broke out in 1898, the bulletin recalls, there were.four regiments of Negro regulars, the 24th and 25th Infantry, and the 9th and 10th Calvary. Colored-troops likewise en-, listed from: many.of the States. Outstanding among the Negro officers ~were Major Charlies BH. Young and.J. R. Marshall. ~The, bulletin tells.of the arrival of the 10th Cavalry at the Battle of San Juan Hill, whith ~has ~been credited with saving the troops commanded by Colonel Theodore, Roosevelt. Negro troops also took an important ~part in ~the Battle of Santiago. Nearly:400,000 Negroes served in the Army during ~the First ~World War, half of them reaching France. the WPA bulletin points out. They every branch: ~ixifantry, cavalry, artillery, signal corps, aviation, hospital:and medical corps, as well as in ammpnition trains, stevedore -regiments, labor battalions, depot ~ bridages, engineers, surveyors, etc. One hundred and ninety-four.of: fleers and men _ received various decorations, including the Congressjonal Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross; the Croix. de Guerre and the Legion of Honor.
