Smith~s twice tied Golden Bulls. Shaw was bagged by the high-flying N. C. State Eagles, 16-0, for the latter's fifth straight 1941 win. |. Meanwhile, Jap Hurt~s Morgan Bears ~went to town~ 12-2 over the. Bulls of Charlotte. The safety registered by Smith against Morgan marred the Bears~ previous record of holding every opponent scoreless, and removed the last unscored-on team in Negro feotball. Prairie View kept pace with Morris Brown, N. C..State, and Morgan, trimming the Tillotson Eagles 33-0. Unbeaten but tied Texas and Fisk were idle, as was once-beaten Southern. However; Tuskegee, Florida, and Langston all moved forward. Tuskegee sacked up S: C. State 33-12 and Langston squeezed through 6-0 on Xavier. Morris Brown is the only club in the country to win as many as six games to date. N. C, State, Tuskegee, Florida, and Langston are the lone quartet to win as many as five thus far. Morgan and N. C. State share undisputed first place in the race for sectional honors up in the CIAA. Wilberforce scrambled back into the national standings by blasting Lincoln (Mo.) 19-6 and now has a numerical lead in~the Midwestern loop with two conference wins against no defeats, while Kentucky State has one loop win in one start. Prairie View and Texas are undisputed, undefeated leaders in the Pt ale Morris Brown is in class by herself i in the tough ~ Morris Brown~s John (Big Train) Moody, 210 pound triple threat unanimous-choice All-American fullback and 1940 high scorér with 109 points in eight games, is getting Deck than he bargained for in the current individual scoring erby. Leading the point-making parade, for example, is Albert = Gant, Florida~s mighty battering ram fullback, with 49} points in five games. Moody is bringing up the rear for the moment with 47. Week before last, Gant led with 37 points, only to be overtaken by Moooody with 41. This time., it was Gant who caught up with and passed Moody by a thin margin. Close behind Gant and Moody is Jolting. Joe Jenkins, Morris Brown halfback and teammate of Moody~s, who now boasts 42 points. Morris (Stonewall) Leake of Benedict has 38. Gant made two touchdowns against Lane and Jenkins a pair against Alabama State Saturday. Moody tallied once ns a *Bama but Leake was held scoreless by the Thoro reds. The SNS sports desk had the usual number of bet-settling questions to answer the past Sunday evening after thiS observer returned from a week-end officiating trip.in Orangeburg where the host ~S. ~C; State eleven bowed to Tuskegee in a wide open, free-scoring ball game. The first caller wanted to clear up the question as to whether either Louis or Schmeling was world champion at the time they met for the first time and the Brown Bomber was kayoed) i The caller was told that neither Louis nor Schmeling, *but Jimmy Braddock, was champion of the: world when Louis and Schmeling met for the first time June 22, 1936 in ~Yankee Stadium with~ Louis being kayoed in the twelfth round. He was told further that the bout was an elimination ~contest to decide the challenger~ deserving first shot at Brad-dock~s title. It was explained that Schmeling earned that right, but, afraid of the effect a Nazi boycott might have on the gate receipts with anti-Hitler sentiment raging. Mike Jacobs and his Twentieth Century Sporting Club conferees ~derailed~ Schmeling, carried Louis over the comeback trail, arid then:gave the Brown Bomber the shot at Braddock | in Chicago~ Juné'22, 1937 when Louis won the world heavy~weight ~rown.
