Collaborates On | New Composition - NEW YORK--(ANP)~William Grant Still, noted composer, and Miss Katherine Garrison Chapin, white, for the seccnd time, have collaborated on an American composition scored for orchestra, based on Miss Chapin~s pcem ~Plain Chant fcr America~ and dedicated to President and Mrs. Roosevelt. John Barbirclli, white, plans to introduce it dur ing the New York Philharmonic-Symphony orchestra cen tennial. Alan Locke. Miss Chapin is Their first collaboration was brought about by Dr., in private life, the wife of United States Atty. Gen. Francis Biddle. Farly this year, Mr. Barbirollis suggested that Mr. Still write something especially for the centennial, and the composer's first thought was to offer orchestral suite. Having planned and completed the suite, Mr. Still decided that something more significant was needed for the occasion, and remembered Miss. Chapin~s poem. Sometime before, he had promised to set the verse to music, after their collaboration of ~And They Lynched Him on a Tree~, which was presented. at Lewisohn stadium in. California. The score had originally plan JOTTERDOWNS ned. an orchestral prelude and interlude to set off the two main sections of the solo, but upon. Mr. Barborilli~s suggestion, a postlude was written to complete the orig inal thought. Said: Miss Chapin, auther of ~Time Has No Shadows~, and ~Gutside of the World,~ ~The success of my collaboration with William Grant Still in his setting, of ~my ballad poem ~And They Lynch ed Him:on a Tree,~ his dramatic and. lyrical ability, his fine, truly American idiom makes me delightéd to collaborate with him again.~ It may be remembered that Mr. Still received the. RATING THE RECORDS By FRANK MARSHALL DAVIS CARLE ON PIANO _ Several months. ago a, Columbia album of piano solos by Frankie Carle, composer of ~Sunrise Serenade,~ was so well received that.a new collection has been released entitled ~Frankie Carle Encores.~ The tunes are SOMEBODY LOVES ME and I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW; SWINGIN~ DOWN. THE LANE AND THE LOVE NEST; I CAN~T BELIEVE THAT YOU'RE IN LOVE WITH ME and AFTER YOU'VE GONE; THE ONE I LOVE BELONGS. TO SOMEBODY ELSE and SWEET AND LOVELY. Backed mainly by bass guitar and drums, many of these sides have jitbugs and the rest are definitely enough bounce and satisfy the pleasant. Carle is a good pianist and knows his way around a keyboard. Although these tunes have ~been around for sometime, they still sound mighty good. SENTIMENTAL GENTLEMAN Admirers of Tommy Dorsey will want his Victor album, ~Getting Sentimental with Tommy Dorsey,~ containing eight reissues which had a lot to do with elevating the trombone playing maestro to the top. Included are ~Getting Sentimental Over You~ and ~Royal Garden Blues.~ ~Marie~ and ~Who~; ~Star Dust~ and ~Song of India~; ~I'll Never Smile Again~ and ~Little White Lies.~ A good collection for any hot, fan. ~ STROKIN~ AWAY That Cootie Williams-on open trumpet follows Louis Armstrong closely is forcibly shown: on the Okeh of ~West End Blues.~ The Coot, backed by a small group of Benny Goodman bandsmen, gives a good copy-of Satchmo~s famous old. recording: of the late 20~s. On the other side, G-MEN, Cootie growls his way through a rip snorting | bounce. Trombone is also tops on | both....Positively the zaniest dit- | ty of the year is SAM YOU MADE | THE PANTS TOO LONG by) Vaughn Monroe on Bluebird. In | dirge tempo.
