Jet for Rock Hill, S.C. last Monday where she will attend Clinton Normal.and Industrial Ccilege. My Impression Of The. National Baptist Convention REV. J. CARL MITCHELL. PASTOR OF THE SIXTEENTH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH HUNTINGTON, WEST VA. For a number of years,:I have attended the. National Baptist Convention and have followed very carefully all of the meetings. With few exceptions the meeting at Cleveland, Ohio was one among the best ~as to representation and attendance. Anyone could have easily predicted the outcome of the election from the very first day of the session. It was Dr. Jemison all the way. It was impossible for any aspirant~ for the presidency to have excelled President Jemison when he had five hundred delegates from Alabama, his own state, in his vest pocket. No other contestant for the office of president could boast. of So many votes from his own state. During the campaign, it was Stated that Dr. Jemison; because of his location in: the South, would be unable to speak up with candor for the welfare of four million Baptist. This very contention was refuted by his Annual address which was a masterpiece, and dealt with all of the vital problems confronting the Negro Race. It was admitted by critics that he struck (the bull~s eye), so that those who were opposed to him on this score were compelled to admit that he had taken: care of this one question of doubt. There ware those who felt that he would ~be unable to match the eloquence -~ ind the scholarly approach in ser ) mon Building and Deliverance that would appeal to the masses of Baptist throughout the country. This contention melted away, as snow before~ a noon day suh, when Dr. Jemison in his masterly way swept ~the audience into spiritual ecstasy Sunday morning. The auditorium was not full as was customary in previous years, when the late President delivered his. message, but the critics. were quick -to-admit: that another year would find any auditorium filled to the: capacity to hear Dr. Jemison deliver his annual sermon. with power, inspiration and thoughtfulness. It cannot be said that he went into office without opposition for there was a Strong militant group at work in opposition to him and the program of the National Baptist Convention. This same force will continuously be felt in the convention, and the administration might do well, to consider their contention. The convention as such is not what many of its members desired to be, but it is the best that we can do under the set up. For the first time the writer | heard political prayers and contest | prayers. Such a thing is, a disgrace to the denomination. God | hears the sincere and earnest prayers, but he fails to hear those who pray to be seen or heard. When we convert our prayers~ into political speeches and display of words in order to gain plaudits of the public, we destroy the sacredness of the prayer offered. Any casual observer would have. recognized this very thing in many of the prayers offered, The program could have been more informative and réepresentative of the Great Church. Whatever corrections that should be made,.ought to come from within the organization: Only time brings about such changes as may be needed for the improvement of the greatest numerical body of Negroes in the world. With all the short comings. that may be found in our Convention, it is still a great and powerful convention. We wish to congratulate Dr. L. A. Pinkston of Georgia for his masterly way of presiding over the great body during the election | of officers. He was completely in possession of the house at all times and ruled with. precision that even. both sides credited him with being fair in his ruling. We predict. for him a great future in the denomination. Next year we go to Memphis in the heart of the South, only a few miles from Alabama. We can say here that Dr. Jemison: will be elected again, for it is impossible to over come numbers. The numerical strength of our convention is inthe South, and as long as the South wants the presidency, ~she can have it, if the election is on the basis. of votes.
