~ <FLINT BROWNSVILLE NEWS, FLINT, MICHIGAN Society News ROSEBUD CLUB > FLINT, Mich.~The Rosebud clut met at the home of Mrs. Willie Mae Kilerkley, No -new members were enrolled this time. A goodly number of the regular members was present and we had a real jolly evening studying the art of Crochet. Many of the girls. have made some very useful articles of house =: a hold value. A~ spirit of competition: mgr more interests freshments, and was it good! The next meeting wiil be at the home of the prseident, Mrs. Julia Alexander. Friday is the day. Willie Elzy; reporter. Recreation ~ Council News ~ Schoo! ~jg ~out~ithe youngsters will have about three months vacation. and as usiial we- have planned our summer playground program accordingly. Our play grounds officially opened last Thursday and will be open five days each week until the end of August. We are operating three such areas for the duration of this period namely, St. John 3420 St. John, Little Oak~North of Stewart Avenue, and Elm Park~on Dwight Street. These areas will be supervised by our staff taken from the WPA and are located as follows: ST. JOHN PLAYGROUND fMornings Arternoung Odell Broadway ~ Williams, Mamie Lewis Lawrence Williams, John Nivian Wright McMullen, Dorthy Carlyle Miller Bell, Eddie LITTLE OAK PLAYGROUND. Ernest Burks, Fmma All playgrounds will be open from 9:00 a. m. until dark. However, the Elm Park area is open ta small children under 11) vears old.~ The older children living in that neishborhoor wil! use Clark Schoel playground. The first SPECIAL BVENT is scheduled at the St.John plsyground ~Friday, June 13, in cbservance of Flag Day. It is a patriotic program in the form cf a ~FLAG PARADE~. Mrs. Odeil Brodaway. Viviam Wright, and Lewis Lawrence will be in charge. | The Gay 16 Club honored several - of the.members. at its annual formal party ~at the International Institute YWCA June 5th.. Miss Evester Steele who graduated from Northern High School this year received the special honcrs. A ~ beautiful gift was bestowed upon this voung lady by Miss. Margaret Lee their president. The girls were beautifully gowned and spent the evening dancing to the music of the WPA. orchestra. It was a lovely evening and the young people conducted themselves splendidly. Burneys Honor Daughter Upor Her ~Graduation ~FLINT - Mich.~Mr. ~ and Mrs. Albert Burney, of 202 East 13th Street gave a graduation reception in honor of. their daughtér, Verlene Gibson, The reception was very nice ~and everyone had a most enjoyable evening. Miss Gibson was. certainly worthy of the many compliments che reecived for having determination, will-pewer, and ambition. to resume her schoo] work and graduate. after several interruptions of serious illnesses. Last November she was forced to leave school because of her health. In January she had to undérgo: a. major -Operation of which she was not expected to live, but, hy. some ~miracle she recovered safely and returned to school three and~ one half weeks after she had come home from: Hurley.Hospital. She was well liked by her teachers and received their ~full cdoperation. Whilé in the hospital; Miss Gibson received many ~ards; letters, and flowers -from. teachers and stu> dents, several churches and friends Beeause she wishes to further her high schoo] education, Miss Gibscn plans to work during the summer, and enroll in Baker's University next fall.
