TURNER Adv, Asst./ ~The Training for Defense Jobs (Negroes) ~~ SUNDAY ~AFT ERNOON, March 23, two distinguished colored men from Detroit, one of them Mr. Ernest Marshall, replacement officer for defense jobs among Negroes, appeared at the Pioneers Development Association's meeting held in Shiloh church: ~ The meeting was heavily attended by people really interested in our group progress. They listened attentively ~to the speakers and got a lot of useful knowledge as to how to go about getting lined up in this great defense setup for training for active Participation in the National Defense effort, now so gravely im portant. The setting up of. the proper committee for Negro action in this matter has not as yet been. touched by our powerful ~eaders.~ We suppose some do nat see any direct, and personal benefit jn it fer themselves.. Therwhite leaders have already put their machinery into action on this thing and are already training their workers for these jobs. The Federal Government has already authorized and the Board has already besun to function. Mr. Lamb, the superintendent of the public schools here, is chairman of this board. On this board there are representaives from the Buick, the U. A. W.C. I. O., the Department of Education, the A. F. of L. and some others. We believe it. is from the local S"siness group, who are #iso represented on this board. This cross section of the various interests have in their power the selection of the trainee and the placement. of them into. jobs. Some of our Negro LEADERS have not even thought seriously enough about the.advancement of us workers, Negro workers, to call a meeting or to advise, and set into motion any unified committee which can look after the cause of their fellow. Negroes. The masses of us here are fast getting fed up on this sort of fon-action by them. They all should~ be in the forefront, at this particular time, to see to it that we get our share of the work which our great country so directiy needs and must have at this time. Such actions from our PRESENT LEADERSHIP in regard to more work andi better jobs for the good people they claim to be interested in, should have already been realized. The Negro leadership in Detroit and in every other community throughout this land is. ON THE JOB SEEING TO IT that the Negro MASSES experience the proper and effective guidance to get the most good out of this emergency National Defense, The question gf National Defenge has a twofold significance to us Negroes. In: the first place, we want to do our full share as Natives of this North American Continent, in the struggle for the preservation of tite Status Quo of our Government. Seccnd, we must take this oppertunity to better our economic circumstancés along ever wider lines in, industry and. business. This ~iron~ of ex defense, from the standpoint of the white group, is now becoming ~red~ with the fire of Nazi danger to Democracy. The tvhole Race cf them will be in a more LIBERAL condition of heart as long as this emer4pncy lasts This opens the way forsour leaders ~to step forward-and carry us, the masses, to higher economic srounds, If Flint~s present leadership continues to fail us, we SHOULD DEMAND of them IMMEDIATE action and if they still IGNORE their CALL. TO DUTY, we should CONDEMN them and select NEW LEADERS who will blaze the path of group improvement in this city of enormous opportunities. Signed: HENRY G. REYNOLDS, Undertaker and Editor. The:Culpepper family barely ~escaped: with their lives, and only after the heroic efforts of the father, W. C. Culpepper, to get his wife and two |jittle girls (one 10 years of age and the other 4), out of the blazing pine-wood and tin structure. The severely burned body of. Joel Brown, delivery boy, was removed from the building by | firemen after were quieted. The Chicken Shack, a famed jocal establishment ever since Mr. Culpepper first opened for business in 1933, specializing in fried chicken, potatoes, and fish, ~was a total loss. The frame structure was gutted from front to back. Only a week before the fire, a local fire insurance company had refused to re-insure the place, although it had carried a policy on it the year previouslv. Accounts of the origin of the fire were somewhat confused. According to Mrs. Culpepper~s version, Joel, who has worked for them since he was a smalj boy (he was arcund 17 at his death), got up to light the gas stove in the establishment around 4:20 a. m. as was his custom. Shortly, a sharp explosion was heard and the boy screamed. The Cylpepper sleeping in an adjacent room was awakened, Mr, Culpepper sprang from his bed and awakened his wife with cries of ~Itun for your life~. His wife stated: the flames had already begun to roar and seemed to engulf the building. Mr. Cul: pepper picked up his two children and thrust them~ through a_ rear window, his. wife thinks, adding that she. was so confused, she does not know exactly how he manhaged to get them out. In the excitement,: she stated she started yack into the biazitig building when she missed the Brown boy. She was held and prevented from entering. The vicinity of the fire was soon choked with peorle, attracted by the explosion, the blaze, and the sirens of the fire department which arrived on the scene in sort order.. The blaze was so intense that even the firemen were unable to reach young S&Brown~s body = at first, They were said to have made three attempts before being able to get him out. It was suggested ty some bystanders,.that the boy may have died from suffocation vefore being burned, _. or that he had swallowed the blaze when he cried out right after the explosion. Brown, the son of Andréw Cum mings, was buried last Saturday afternoon from the parlors of the Southern Funeral] Home, _ Mrs, Cuipepper stated that she haq heard following the fire that a leaky gas main had been. located by one of the city inspectors. She was not sure whether this was true or false. The Culpepper. family was ~stopning at the home of a friend last Saturday. Mrs. Culpepper at the time visited was preparing to attend the Brown boy's funeral. the flames Mr. Culpepper was out and could not be reached for a statement. Culpepper~s Chicken Shack enjoyed a city-wide reputation. for the excellence of its fried chicken and fish.
