Boasting an overall 1941 record of 24 straight wins, the ~For ty Niners~ have their imperialistic eyes foeused on the forthcoming and none too distant eighth. annual SIAC) Basketball Tournament at Tuskegee Institute February. 27-27, March 1. Clark, since the Florida and Morris Brown setbacks, has been rolling along inevitably enough and is a pretly.good bet to come through in runner-up position at the close of the visi tation span. with Xavier. This would: enable her to be topseeded along But endangering Clark~s bid for a No. 2 Ldedihg are Tus- f kegee and Morris Brown. The Gold Tigers wh 40-37 last year during the visitation campaign. ped Clark that was on thie Tuskegee floor just before tournament time.~ When the clubs meet this year history will be repeating as fay as time and place are concerned. The results may or may not be re -yersed. As for the Purple Wolverines, they~re in first division how for the first time this campaign~securely enwrapped in fourth position and dangerously in the running f third and second honors. The Gravesmen represent a mighty barrier for both Clark and Tuskegee. Despite all Clark~s technical brilliance, the Cardinal and _ Black looks at least a year away from another SIAC title to ' this observer. Tuskegee looks as formidable, Morris Brown and Xavier seem definitely better fortified, and |Florida, on the face of the records, appears equally as good too. Among the troublemakers, S. C. State and Morehouse rank at the very top, with a nod also to Lane, which despite a| weak defense, has a flock of high-geared shooters and. can hatidle just about the fastest company on a ~hot~ night. S. C. State, Morehouse is much better than her record. Alabama is another troublesome hombre, especially around tour nament time. Still the Hornet defense is nothing to write Younger, with a sizzling first half home about either; Coach C. Johnson Dunn realizes he has a job cut out for himself. If the column were called on, at this wattie, to put a finger on the our 1941 semifinalists at Tuskegee, on the basis of that indefinable something known as ~~form~ name Xavier, Morris Brown, Tuskegee, and Clar].!- his isn~t because Florida, a dangerous ball club sure enough, doesn~t hold the high regard of the ote But. - remember, the pick is ~on form~. - Ask the column to disregard ~form~ and it would name Xavier and Morris Brown~ with spired pick, the fingers crossed on Clark, Tuskegee, make an in and Florida. One must not preclude the possibility of outstanding upsets either. With Morehose, 8. C. Let~s hark back and_ remember what we said.. Remember how we predicted the 1941 basketball frolic with Xavier, Clark, Tuskegee, Knoxville and Florida at the head of the pack. Only one. of that five star final cast has come through~Xavier! Xavier, it. had to come through. Ted has *the materia] and the facilities but _ his record breaking freshmen champs of 1939 simply couldn't stand prosperity,. ABy Ric ROBERTS make: no mistake about} Biggest Threats To Xavier Should Be Clark, Mortis Brown They got the old swell head, the old inflatus..and Florida put them on the skids, 52 to 35,: and sent them home from Tuskegee blinking. | This year they ~have wrecked Gaither~s orange ~clad,: wrecked Tuskegee the ~SIAC. amd the Southwestern Conference also. The tournament | jis almost on our calendars and | the big ery, at this moment, hap} ms to concern the chances of the test of the field against Xavier. Will Ted Wright, packing that familiar big, black cigar, dominate the tournament as he has the visitation season? The answer is, yes. FATE AND CHANCE | Xavier has been the choice at Tuskegee~ before. She had the nod in 1937. 1938, 1939 and 1940, She came through in ~38 and '39 but stalled before. Clark in 1937, Florida in 1940. I give.Lane, LeMoyne, ~. C. / State, Benedict, Talladega, Fisk. I think Clark and) Mortis Brown may rate a chance~not anything like an even chance, mind you, but one just the same. Dowell and C may be the duo that Morris Bi has needed the past two yeexws. The Graves combine looks like it is going places from here in. The team took both Clark and Morehouse during the week. It tore Clark's stratagems to water on Morehouse~s inflammable spirit. Captain Clarence (Sonny) in which he was all over the court, turned in 11 points in that _ brief space to round out a fine day~s work. This was the best effort for the winners, but Robert (Robby) Robinson ~and Ernest (Hunky) White, varsity replacements, had on their shooting clothes and treatec themelves to nine and cight points respectively to play a big part in the ~dirty work.~ MOVES THE BALL The big five, with ~Norman (Red) Baxer operating at forward, started the contest and had no easy thing at all with the tight "Dega defense, but impressed with its uncanny ability to work the ball into scoring position, even if the shots, upon being ~ set-up~, were missed due to poor timing end dust-laden eyes. The 1941 team has not yet evolved. The month that I begged for has not been enough. The Clark team may not arrive this year. The time is beginning to slin past and the total chaos and disorder in those: last seven minutes in both the Florida and Morris Brown reverses cling to the memory. Brown, who in fact, led the Kitchenites in scoring with 10 points, followed closely by A. Claiborne with nine points, and Govdenough with seven, Daniel Tyler, ~Dega scoring threat, was *blueprinted~ expertly and was limited to a lone free toss. APPEAR READY ~On the strength of their play against Talladega Friday, Hunky White, Robby Robinson, Billy Scruggs and Prince Swiggins made it clear they will be fine re. placement material in the near future, while Leon O~Hara, Sterling Morris, Ivan (The Terrible) Harper, Boswell, and Hill all showed a hustle that means tournameni - laurels for ~Dega_ if the Tornado gets off to a good start at Tuskegee soon.
