The fight is scheduled for 15 rounds. Ring observers consider Godoy as representing the only blemish against the ' record of the world heavyweight champion. They know he had a broken hand in the Tommy Farr fiasco and outpointed the British Empire with free use of but one mitt fof eleven of the 15 rounds. ~They saw him pummel! Max Schmeling, the Black Uhlan, to shreds to avenge a twelfth round kayo at the hands of the German in 1936. They also saw him catch up with and knock out Bicycle Bob Pastor in Detroit last Septembef. Those were the black marks on Joe Louis~ reord prior to the disgusting spectacle against Godoy a few months ago. The earlier adverse showings have been stricken from the champion~s record in the minds of evéryone. But no one has forgotten that Godoy affair. Hence, the rematching of the two fighters June 20 in Yankee Stadium has met with the satisfaction of everyone~especially the Brown Bomber. First to congratulate |i Joe on the return opportunity to prove his superiority over the foreigner was Former World Light Heavyweight Champion John Henry Lewis. Joe Louis has ~onvinced everyone he will knock out Godoy ~if he will stand up and fight me.~ But what assurance, the column asks, has anyone that theChilean will do so? Mindful of the Brown Bomber~s murderous carnage in return matches, as demonstrated in the sesond Schmeling bout, Godoy is a cinch, to display even greater evasiveness and unorthodox tactics in the forthcoming- return go; If Louis aspires to stop Godoy, it will have to be by way of strategy that will counteract the clowning, ducking, or eruoching tactics of his South American challenger. Godoy:is far too cunning to trade punches with ~the champion. Remember Bob Pastor~s followers promised he wouldn~t ~back-pedal~ against Louis in the Detroit match last fall. Pastor said nothing~proving he hadn~t made up his mind yet. Well, the column discovered the former New York University footbail player HAD made up his mind when he finally got inside the squared arena with the Brown ~Bomber that night. And, as was to be expected, he had decided ~Discretion is the better part of valor.~ Mr. Pastor was most proficient with his ~hit-and-run~ tactics~ that night~that is, he was after he escaped that unexpected ~rush act~ of Louis~ in the very first round when the champion had him on the canvas four sae the bell finally coming to the rescue. Pastor~s apparent determination to bined: pedal but. not to make it. too obvious didn~t prove sound strategy, because, in the second round, Louis tagged him again and he was down for the fifth time. After that, he was convinced there was nothing to do:but keep away from the dynamiting heavyweight champion. His manager~s ringside cries of ~Keap away from him~ were hardly necessary ~from the second round on. But,.as stated, Joe is a killer not to be denied when it~s revenge he~s after. He had a _ real killer instinct in the statement that ~I can beat Louis any day because he can~t think for himself.~ The German~s words haunted Louis. That night, Louis haunted the German. Galento made a mistake when he called Louis a bum. The Bomber had malice in his heart from the time Tony first made the unwise statement until he finally had his odious rival on the cairvas, Louis had no real disdain for ~Pastor, becusids Bob was wise enough not to say anything to offend the Bomber. Joe admitted to the column and other sepia sports scribes in the Motor City last year that he considered Pastor a clean white boy and, after the fight, the champion said Bob fought him toe to toe as long as he could stand it. He called Pastor the fairest and cleanest man he ever fought and expressed a keen desire to see him succeed. He said he~d be glad to give Pastor another shot at the title and that the time. couldn~t come too soon. As for Godoy. You know the story. Louis hates the crouching, crawling, ~gloves-on-the-floor,~ and butting tactics of the rough-and-tumble South American. He has one of the most genuine urges to blast the Chilean~s head off his shoulders he ever entertained since turning to pro fighting. - It is the firm belief of the column Louis may never knockout Godoy. --It doesn~t believe Godoy will ever rise to the dignity of employing conventional fighting tactics (aceording to the Marquis of Queensberry Rules) against |. the.champion. That is why it regards Louis~ task this June as a most hopeless one. But whatever the Brown. Bomber~s chances may be, the corner. will: be at the ringside to tell SNS observers all about it~the same as it did in the other revenge matches against Schmeling and Pastor. cially designed plaque to commem- peanut and sweet potato and whose orate. the | achievements of Professor Carver,| coming the destructive diseases whose discoveries include hundreds | which have afflicted. the cotton~ pe ee meny outstanding | brilliant research resulted in over ress n Tuesday, May 14, The bus 2a Sag oraar keene. a de; a play enti Ji tion, which be in on May 10 Hiant Idea~, will be given at to complete the final arrangements Lincoln School Friday evening.
