Dequindre Avenue Detroit, Michigan ys. (Church Cooperation Noting a cooperative effort. between a group of churches, the question afdse-in our mind, Why not more church cooperation? Churches, are simply collections Or organizations of human beings, and ~since cooperation is the highest form of activity in which~ human beings. @an.engage, is it to be supposed that any form of cooperative effort is too high or intricate for us to oe a church to engage therein? That. was a fine gesture toward the highest fons of religious cooperation when, not long since, two Atlanta churches of different denominations engaged in a joint revival. This is as it should |. be, for these two ministers were obviously interested in the saving of men~not the saying of doctrine or polity. ~If men are at all i and were truly saved, the doctrine would take care of itsel We must not let the schools and the secular organizations outstrip the churches in cooperative effort. No breach has to \ be considered on account of Baptist arithmetics or Presbyterian ~geographiés for they do not exist as such and most educational institutions are not as prone as are churches to set up imaginary |, differencésg,..:.-. --\ Every: church, 3 it is worthy of the name, ought, especially in its Sunday: school, have a standing committee on church codperation. Most ~of-the churches~ economic efforts draw on the same group of people.almost all the time. Cooperative effort would not absolutely prevent this, but it would create an ever-widening circle which would bring in new helpers constantly and would thus IN DISGUISE With. flying fists and flying heels the Negro is threatening to run away with things athletic in this country. Having already won a Place of prominence, the Negro seems to be bjdding for preeminence in the few fields open to his athletic prowess. On the cinder patn the Negro is a very run-away and in the squared circle he is a little demon. So invariably the Negro outruns and outboxes his Nordic brother that this writer is afraid least. the Negro~s physical prowess raises the suggestion as to his mental inferiority. It is hardly probable that nature would endow a creature with great physical powers and add to these mental superiority. The compensatory habits of nature dispels the hop- that supreme intellectual and physical powers may be combined in one race of men, If the Negro excels in things physical then we might expect other races to excel in things intellectual. This is one reason why I have been slow to believe that Negroes can generally excel in things intellectual. This is one reason why IT have been slow to beueve that Negroes can generally excel whites in any line of endeavor or vica versa. It is not safe to generalize and yet if Negroes keep on ~running wild~ on the cinder path and keep on beating up folks in the ring, it will be hard to avoid the conclusion that the Negro is physically superior. The white man will tum to his laboratories and claim with equal good reason his own intellectual superority. What he cannot prove by induction he may a conclusively thus by deduc~ion. HOW TO EXPLAIN How then may we explain these increase ~the..income of ~the cooperators. In addition, it would make best Knoivn those churches which have a true spirit of devotion to human service, and thus many petty- worries of the present would disappear permanently. Nothing.can~be lost by cooperation among churches and when a church has a ~set of officers or a minister who does not want to cooperate with~ other churches, you need new_ blood ~in your officia) ranks. SSS 2. ~ Well Dane, ~Good And Faithful \. Doctor. Davage!: 4 That was a.great opportunity greatly arisen to, when, on Monday r. M.S, Davage, president of* Clark University, addressed the Atlatita Rotary Club on What Atlanta Negroes Need and What.Thkey Think. Such occasions are not new to Doctor Davage, tho~ this was new to the Rotarians, and even if it were necessary to put on the pressure of logic or argumentation for adequat Acfense of a line of thought or a point, when the occa sion arist * thew Simpson avage. Our surprise comes all from the breadth and depth of the spirit of the Rotarians~not from the Davage angle,~we know him only foo well. If he had gone there witha set - gpeech and the occasion had de-4 manded what he considered a more applicable discussion, he would have quietly folded that formal ad@ress into his pocket and the outpouring of fact end logic and humanitarian pleading would have left ~his hearers none the wiser as to the previously prepared address. He has read for fullness; he has ~~ written for exactness; and his ccntact with other great:souls for forty years makes him exceedingly ready for any fray; =~ hence the complete, satisfaction of the Ro ~ Let us (peay that the day is now over for unprepared colored men to represent us at the bar of public opinion ~ whatever the occasion. Those Rotarians appeared to have wanted the truth. It appears that they got ~it, ~and not a little of the satisfaction is due to the type of personality ~and the eed ove of on telligence. that presen even W. Ralph McGill is pleased to call _ ~disturbing~ facts in a most undis Southern declaration, ~I know the Negro,~ is totally untenable now, and while that statement was becoming hoary with age, we were raising up three generations of fine Negroes~each superior to the other. ~I know the Negro~ is useful now to only a type of white man and Negro~neither of which has yet emerged from Slavery. ' But what does such an, occasion mean to us as a group? Two things stand out prominently. First, there is the happy fact that the South is discovering that we are human and due certain treatment beyond a gingerly conceived formality accorded us after whites get theirs. Secondly, we must learn that this is MERELY a discovery and not a realized privilege.. This means there is much to: be done. Men can easily talk parks and schools on the mezzanine floor of a great hotel, but that is a long, long distance: from city hall, the court house and the ballot box. These occasions point that way: It is up to you and me to make the people: vote-minded, to have them register at the. proper time and place and when voting time comes, so register their wills or their protests as to make schools and parks a reality. In the days of slavery the rinaway Negra was never hunted by. the white man on foot. If the runaway Negro was to be breught back the white man had ~to go after him with horses and hounds. This was fine development for the ~horses end fine practice for the hounds, but it was not teaching the white. man the art of hasty locomationrunning, Let us suppose then that *he Negro was perfected in his running arts and hahits. Tt is Jogical then~ to~ that if the white man chine et the: Negro oh the inder track be zet horsee and hounds. A few days ago E.read in one of the local papers that a Negro had been arrested. and.there was found upon him nitro-glycerine and a cold chisel and other implements used in-cracking a safe. I felt highiy encouraged.to read the acccunt. and there was a sullen ~pride~: of race when I reflected from stealing hams and chickens and is going in for safe-cracking. For many generations the Negro~s name has been connected with chickens and. watermelons and it has besn whispered that the Negro~s propensity for misplacing other pegme~s chicken was undeniable. While white:men: were blowing safes and wrecking banks and getting away with light sentences, the Negro was sticking to his chickens and a ham new and then for a change, and was drawing long sentences and bearing. a bad name in the press of ~the nation. Texas Reprieve Victim Finally Given-To- Chair HUNTSVILLE, Tex.~(A N P)~ Early last Mondey morning the hands of the clock in the warden~s office at the penitentiary indicated the ~zero hour~ for condemned prisoner Winzell Williams and. 4 short time later-he died in -. the électric chair for the nurder of 2 that the Negro is getting away. Ry FREDERICK S. WEAVER Race PT Is Lauded By Professor the Citizens Trust Company,- At WASHINGTON, D. C~ Thai lanta, president of the Atlanta Ne smal] Negro business compare favorably with small business houses operated by any other group, was the conclusion reached by Jesse B. Bilaytyon, professor of accounting in Atlanta - University, in an atidress delivered at Howard Uni-/ versity last Wednesday, under the auspices of the Department of Commerce and Financing of Haw ard University. ~Negroes are largely handicap ped by lack of capital,-but it ought te be added,~ he stated, ~that had many of these persons ~ had. adequate capital, and no knowledge of scientific business - management, they would not have had it long.. Perhaps it is just as well to allow these people to acquire their capital as they acquire the training and experience to direct that capital. Again, Blayton emphasized that Negroes are not alone in the handicap of insufficient capital. Small concerns of other racial groups are also handicapeq thusly, he pointed out, largely because government agencies are not equipped to handle, loans of the size and security offered by the-smal] business concern, and local banks must get their money back in a short time after it is loaned, thus making it impossible for such institutions to extend capital credit to the operators of smail business. HIGH QUALITY MANAGEMENT The fact that Negro business has manageg to exist amid the competition of white business in Negro neighborhoods, who put on a show of greater respect, ~hypocritically,~ and in spite of the fact that a large percentage of Negro labor has been displaced because of institution of machines in certain industrites, is evident of the general high quality of management extent in Negro business, the speaker pointed out. Blayton expressed the belief that Secretary of Commerce Hopkins had the Negro business in mind when, in an address, he declared that ~one of my principal interests as secretary of commerce will be to see that the resources of the government are paticularly directed towards aiding smal] enterprises.~ SEES UNDERSECRETARYSHIP ~We can see no reason,~ the speaker declared, ~why the Department of. Commerce should not have among its employed executives a number of qualified Negroes. We might even dream of an undersecretaryship.~ ~Your speaker: has been informed by reasonably reliable persons iat it is now. difficult for vite yovernment to engage the Ss of. the best qualified experts in the fields of economics anq administration,~ Blayton told his audience. ~It seems. that such persons are better paid by private industry. 1f this tendency may be relied upon as predicting the calibre of techni. cal and professional personnel in fhe employ of the Government and the Civil Service of the States, it probably is not too much to hope that these governing bodies will turn, even to Negroes, if among them there can be found persons of training and experience comparable to that possessed by white exrts who have shunned Civil Service and accepted employment. with the larger industrial concerns of the Country.~ Blayton, in addition to his pro gro Chamber of Commerce, senior partner of Blayton & Co., certified public accountants gnd grand keeper of finances for the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for the past six years.
