Background

Scope and Content:

The collection consists almost entirely of Paul Bigby's topical files, correspondence, and programs relating to his University of Michigan alumni activities, especially the Football Bust and U-M Night. Grace Bigby's matreials include her 1998 memoir, as well as her decades-long correspondence with her Chinese friends.

Biographical / Historical:

Paul Stevens Bigby (1907-2003) was a graduate of the University of Michigan College of Engineering, class of 1931. Grace Lister Bigby (1908-2001) was an Ann Arbor, Mich. businesswoman. The couple married in 1933. Following graduation, Paul Bigby continued to be involved in University alumni activities. He was a director of the U-M Alumni Association for over 40 years and served as the Association's President in 1970-1971. Grace Bigby engaged in various entrepreneural activities. For example, in 1960, she opened the reowned Treasure Mart store with her buisiness partner Demaris "Dee" Cash (1905-2001).

Both Paul and Grace Bigby were involved with the Ann Arbor Skating Club. Paul served as the club's President in the 1950s and Grace chared several committees. In 1979, Paul co-chaired the One Hundred Year Celebration of Michigan Football. Grace handmade 24 replicas of the original 1879 U-M football uniforms for this event.

Grace Bigby passed away in January 2001. Paul Bigby died in July 2003.

Acquisition Information:

The collection was received from Paul Bigby (donor no. 6505 ) in April 1989 and Grace L. Bigby (also donor no. 6505 ) in November 1989.
