The papers were acquired in two accessions. The first was transferred by Carl E. Guthe (donor no. 1500) in 1944. The second was transferred by the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropology (donor no. 9273) in 2003.
The collection is open for research. Materials contained in the Journals, 1912-1944 series (Box 4) and in the Correspondence, 1921-1974 series (Box 5) have been severely damaged in a fire. In December 2022, they were removed for conservation. Researchers should consult series-level Scope and Contents Notes and folder-level lists for more detailed information regarding access and use of materials in Boxes 4 and 5.
To protect fragile audiovisual recordings (such as audio cassettes, film reels, and VHS
tapes), the Bentley Historical Library has a policy of converting them to digital
formats by a professional vendor whenever a researcher requests access. For more
information, please see: http://bentley.umich.edu/research/duplication/.
Copyright status is unclear for the Philippine Expedition materials, topical files, and photographs. Copyright for the correspondence series has been transferred to the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan but the collection may contain third-party materials for which copyright was not transferred. Patrons are responsible for determining the appropriate use or reuse of materials.
