Biography
Arthur Lyon Cross was born November 14, 1873 in Portland, Maine. He graduated from Harvard College with an AB degree in 1895. While at Harvard, Cross worked with Edward Channing, continuing his studies, receiving his A.M. in 1896 and his Ph.D. in 1899. His thesis was later published as The Anglican Episcopate and the American Colonies.
Cross came to the University of Michigan in 1899 as an instructor. He was promoted to professor in 1911 and in 1916 he was appointed Richard Hudson Professor of English History. Cross was noted for his courses on English and constitutional history, and for his various writings, especially A history of England and Greater Britain and his history of St. Andrew's Church in Ann Arbor. Cross died June 21, 1940.
