Scope and Content:

This unbound scrapbook contains invitations and programs to various University of Michigan social events including Junior Hops and commencement exercises from Ann Arbor High School (1874-1877) and the University of Michigan (1874-1877). The scrapbook also contains receipts, report card slips, tickets, school songs, Psi Upsilon Fraternity member death notices, a graduation examination, 1 small publication (titled: A Card), as well as other small souvenirs and ephemera.

Biographical / Historical:

William H. Lightner was a University of Michigan (U-M) class of 1877 graduate. As a student, in 1875-1877, Lightner spent time as a surveyor mapping the south shores of Lakes Ontario and Erie from the mouth of the Genesee River in Rochester, NY to the north shore of Lake Erie in Canada. Lightner also spent time surveying Niagara Falls and the Niagara River. Still a student, in the Fall of 1877 Lightner began working for the law office of William Jemison in Detroit, Mich.

In August 1878 Lightner was invited to serve as an assistant United States Engineer for a surveying expedition of the Yellowstone River. After the expedition, Lightner returned to the University of Michigan to complete his law degree. After completing his law degree, Lightner settled in St. Paul, MN where he maintained a very successful law practice.
