Research 1964-1997 [series]

Research, 1964-1997 (9.0 linear feet), documents Neal's activities as a research scientist in the field of high-energy physics. This series has been organized into the following six subseries:Experiments, 1964-1987; Funding, 1968-1992; Indiana University Spark Chamber Group, 1967-1973; PEP, 1976-1990; DZERO (D0), 1982-1996; and ATLAS, 1997 .

Experiments, (bulk 1964-1977) 1964-1987 [subseries]

The subseries Experiments, 1964-1987 comprises documentation of high-energy physics experiments conducted by Neal, often with the collaboration of other researchers. Materials in this subseries include notebooks, correspondence, blueprints, and draft publications. Final versions of publications based on the experiments contained in this subseries are generally filed under the Publications, 1966-1996 series. While most of the items in this subseries have been identified as relating to a specific experiment (e.g., E280), there are a significant number of documents at the end of the subseries that were not easily identifiable as relating to one of the known experiments.

DZERO (D0) 1982-1996 [subseries]

The DZERO (D0), 1982-1996 subseries documents several aspects of the international, extremely large D0 collaborative research project. Specifically, it documents Task K, the portion of the project carried out at the University of Michigan, including the building and use of an Intercryostat Detector (ICD). This subseries also documents several projects in which Neal was involved that developed computerized databases for use by D0 collaborators.

ATLAS 1997 [subseries]

The subseries ATLAS, 1997 currently contains only one document, a draft of a proposal for the University of Michigan to become involved in the ATLAS research project. Since 1997, Neal and the University of Michigan Physics Department have been extremely involved in this project; hopefully, future acquisitions to the collection will reflect this involvement.

Teaching and Academic Administration 1966-1997 [series]

The series Teaching and Academic Administration, 1967-1997 (12.25 linear feet) documents Neal's career as an instructor and administrator at three universities, and has been organized accordingly into the following subseries:University of Indiana, 1966-1981 ;State University of New York (SUNY) Stony Brook, 1981-1986; andUniversity of Michigan, 1987-1997 .

Indiana University 1966-1981 [subseries]

The subseries University of Indiana, 1967-1981 documents Neal's positions at that school as an Assistant, Associate and full Professor of Physics, and the Dean of Research and Graduate Development. Of particular note in this subseries are Neal's annual faculty activity reports, and full sets of his materials for undergraduate physics courses he taught in the 1970s, including upper division courses on circuitry and computer technology. Correspondence in this subseries is divided between the Physics Department, which includes general correspondence such as letters of recommendation, and Research and Graduate Development, which contains correspondence specific to that office.

Professional Activities 1968-1997 [series]

Professional Activities, 1968-1996 (10.0 linear feet) documents Neal's involvement in conferences, organizations and issues related to research physics. Of particular note in this series are documents related to Neal's chairmanship of the National Science Board Committee on Undergraduate Science and Engineering Education, which in 1986 produced a document colloquially known as the "Neal Report." Also of interest in this series is documentation of the controversy over a planned Smithsonian exhibit on the Enola Gay and the end of WWII that occurred while Neal was serving on the Smithsonian Institution Board of Directors. In 1995, Neal helped organize a symposium about the controversy, held at the University of Michigan.
